Charging with Tesla Mobile Connector Problematic

When we received our new Rivian (R1S, 2026) it would not charge at all with our charging cable (Tesla mobile connector plugged in to a 240V socket) until we hard reset the vehicle.
Subsequently we have found charging only works if we unplug the cable first.
Interestingly, we have also found that charging the Tesla fails if it has been used on the Rivian previously - so it looks like the mobile connector has some kind of memory of the previous car it was used to charge.

Does this accord with anyone else's experience? Given all of this, we're also looking for recommendations for a (very) reasonably priced charger that will definitely work with both vehicles.

I use an Emporia charger, works great on my Tesla and Rivian. My charger is a J1772 and I use an adapter for the Tesla but they have a J3400 version.

You can check out a web site called State of Charge, Tom Moloughney tests a lot of chargers and rates them.

What version of the mobile connector are you using? If it was a pre 2021 it may not work. From wikipedia “it was not until 2021 that Tesla vehicles began supporting the expanded communications protocol that is specified as part of NACS.” Wiki Eg the communication protocol on older tesla NACS devices is different. Newer Tesla chargers support both.

I have and use a 2020 Tesla mobile connector with no problems. If you're having an issue with both cars, it's obviously likely the mobile charger...

I use an Emporia charger, works great on my Tesla and Rivian. My charger is a J1772 and I use an adapter for the Tesla but they have a J3400 version.

I've got this one as well, with J1772, and use it to charge both my R1T and my wife's Polestar 2 regularly with zero issues.

Same problem here. I just traded my Gen 1 R1T for a Gen 2 R1T with NACCS port. We do not have a wall charger at our summer place. Tried to charge it with my 2018 Tesla Mobil charger. Won't work. Switched to Rivian mobile J1772 charger with the Rivian J1772 to NAACS adapter and no problem. I guess it was a good thing I kept the old Rivian mobile charger. I did leave a Tesla Tap NAACS to J1772 adapter in the truck along with the Rivian NAACS to CCS adapter. BTW, we have Tesla wall charger at our home in PHX where it easily handles both the Tesla and the Rivian. It always did, even the Gen 1 with a Tesla Tap.

Just to let you know, after continuing problems with the Tesla mobile connectors I caved and got the emporia charger as recommended above. Works like a charm! I can switch between the 2 cars with no problems.

I too am having problems with my 2026 R1T using a Tesla mobile connector. My connector is a 2022 version. I keep getting errors on both the charger and in the R1T. I have a tried both the soft and hard resets and still encounter errors. I spend way too much time trying to get it to work with resets, unplugging and plugging, over and over. Sometimes I get it to work after multiple attempts and sometimes I don't, forcing me to use a supercharger at very high KWH rates. If it is a protocol issue, shouldn't Rivian fix this with a software update rather than forcing you to buy a new wall charger?

I've only had the vehicle for 3 weeks now and I have run into multiple problems, such as not being able to assign my wife a digital key and having the plastic moulding at the base of left rear door come apart. I am really frustrated right now now.

Update: I had a mobile appointment scheduled for between 12 and 4pm today. After waiting for 3 weeks for this appointment, Rivian cancelled it. The worst part is that no one notified me of the cancellation. I called Rivian at 4:15 and asked what happened. The service rep told me that they decided my street was too hilly and there wasn't enough space to do the work? What a crock of BS. Yes, I live on top of a hill but I live on a wide, level street and I have a 3-car driveway. The rep apologized and said I should have been notified. Now I'm waiting for someone to get back to me to re-schedule. I had to arrange for a babysitter to pick up and watch my grandkids (at a cost). I've had this R1T for 1 month now and I can honestly say that this is the worst experience I've ever had with a new(er) vehicle.

Have any of you experienced anything like this? Also, any suggestions on who to contact to address this issue and make it right. I'm beyond frustrated.
