I'm honestly surprised Pet Mode isn't available at launch. It seems like such a straightforward feature, so I'm curious what's making it complex enough to require an OTA update? I've never really understood situations like this. What am I missing?

It effectively is available at launch considering the number of non-employee deliveries is still very small and the OTA is any day now. As discussed at length in another thread, software is hard. There are thousands of cross dependancies. Hell or high water, they’re trying to stick to the June timeline so some things just didn’t make it up the list as fast as others.

welcome to vehicle as software, where it’s never truly finished.
Plus the mirror/cam is new to Rivian and they were still working out the bugs with the hardware.

Yea I get it. As a programmer if I had the script for pet mode on the R1 that works great, it wouldn't be necessary to rewrite the same code. From my perspective it just doesn't make sense.

Are you a software engineer? Software, is like everything else. Seems so simple if you have no experience. But there is no safe fix/change to code. Even what seems like the simplest most trivial change can have unintended consequences on another part of the code. All the HVAC code is going to be intertwined.

Yes, actually I am.

My point wasn't that Pet Mode is easy to implement. I understand that even seemingly simple software changes can have unintended consequences.

What surprised me is that a feature like Pet Mode, something that fits squarely within Rivian's adventure and pet-friendly brand wasn't ready at launch. It seems like the kind of feature that would have been prioritized long before release. Especially with a team of amazing programmers. That was the point I was making.

R1 is different hardware.
True.

True.
From what I've heard, the RGB camera in the R2 is new and they haven't ironed out all the bugs for Pet Mode. But seems that is no longer the case as it's in the queue for the next update. Glad I won't have to wait for it after delivery. I'm calling my R2 Cattle Dog Taxi.

:) Lots of devs around here. Too often get comments like that from people who have no idea what they are talking about.
So it actually uses the camera for pet mode? Interesting. Does it auto detect a pet in the car? Have to say pet mode was actually a big selling point for our MY. Traveling with a dog around the SW is so much easier. There are probably plenty of higher priority items for release, but having it when people are pulling the trigger on purchase is way bettery than the promise of some time in the future.

If I had a dollar for every guy who claims something is easy to implement or fix via software I’d have enough to fix my out of warranty suspension.

If I got a penny for every person who confused product/feature prioritization with implementation difficulty and decided to play keyboard warrior, I'd be a billionaire.

I never said Pet Mode would be easy to implement. My point was simply that I'm surprised it wasn't prioritized before launch, given how well it aligns with Rivian's adventure and pet-friendly brand. 🤦‍♂️

Completely understand where you're coming from and your point.

June 9 was the official launch of R2 to the general public, Pet Mode will be in next update presumably within a month, so looking at the bigger picture....they're not far off the mark. They receive grace in my book.

I agree. Rivian is doing a great job and as a R2 res holder I hope they crush it with the R2.

My original comment was simple and just being surprised that's all, but I had no idea some people (not you) would get so butt hurt over nothing.
