Is availability of Gen 3 / LiDAR builds going to be later than originally announced.

My notice for ordering the Premium trim said my timeline is between December and February. When I got the notice, I asked the Rivian Assistant if the build would be a Gen 3/LiDAR equiped vehicle. The response indicated that it likely would be Gen 3. When I ask the question now, the assistant says it could be Gen 2 or Gen 3- more of a hedge now. Has anyone else noticed this change? Any other insights from Rivian public statements, etc?

I would not expect the chatbot to divulge any non-public information. It is probably only given the public website and support docs, and maybe some internal customer support scripts. Executive decisions like launch timing are not going to be something they feed to the LLM chatbot.

The fact it gave you a definitive answer at first and hedged later shows how it is just a regular LLM spitting out the most likely sentence, making stuff up if needed. If you got an actual response from a human on the support team (not a salesperson in a showroom), then I'd be inclined to believe it, but anything else if probably just speculative.

Rivian assistant is garbage for these kind of questions where there is limited info on google. It's just going to make up an answer that's likely wrong instead of saying "I don't know"

I know why people are doing it but R2 Gen 1.5 (LIDAR + RAP1 on the same Gen1 R2) constantly being called Gen 3 kills me. 🤣

It is/will be third generation hardware though, just not the third generation of the R2 vehicle. But that's why the vehicles have model year designations. Gen1/Gen2/Gen3/etc will be useful for comparing compute/sensor capabilities across the product lines while the year specifies which version of the particular car you have. Hopefully, it will remain clean so one model year doesn't have two hardware versions, but when people say "Gen3 R2" its just shorthand for "202X R2 with Gen3 hardware".
Its also easier to say Gen2 R1 to distinguish from Gen1 rather than remembering whether it was the 2024, 2025, or 2026 model year that switched. If they ever have a visual refresh of the existing vehicles (without a HW bump), then we'll probably see people using the year instead of the HW generation like in other cars.

Like I said… I know why people say it. It’s not the same as R1 because Gen2 R1 is actually the real Gen2 R1 that also happens to correlate with Gen2 compute platform. With R2 it gets weird because Gen1 R2 has Gen2 compute but will soon have Gen3 compute. While R1 may not get Gen3 compute until there is actually a Gen3 R1. 🤪

Rivian's party line has remained consistent. The Chatbot is gathering information from all over the place including this forum, Reddit, random blogs etc. and presenting that.
