Just use native NACS. Plenty of options available. Adapters should die.
In the US there are no dispensers that output more than 600amps with NACS cables. Ionna has the hardware capable, but the NACS cables they use are only rated to 500amps.

The issue is getting the R2 max charge rates and curve, it needs to pull over 600amps.

Agree, R2 should not be using NACS to CCS adapters at DC fast charging dispensers capable of outputting 600amps.

This is incorrect…any Alpitronic station at IONNA or Walmart or MB gives 600+ amps on native NACS. RAN chargers on native NACS are rated for 650 amps too, dependent on hardware generation.

Stand corrected. Guess we are in a situation where R2 owners need to know whether they are using Alpitronic or ABB. It could explain why they could be pulling only 375amps on NACS cable on ABB unit. Using an adapter on CCS cable pulling 600+amps is where issue could arise with ABB unit.

So to get R2 advertised charging specs one needs to find Alpitronic or RAN(next gen) units with NACS. Those are not exactly readily available. Ionna recently went above 120 active sites. How many of new Rivian Adventure Network sites have next gen hardware?

One point of order first: to get Rivian advertised charging times you only need a 500 amp charger, which all Tesla superchargers are for example. To get better than their advertised charging times by 1-2 minutes you need a 600 amp charger. This is only if you plugin at 10% or less also. If you plugin at 20% or 30% you likely won’t even notice.

Yes, it’s ridiculous for sure that ABB put out chargers with those NACS cables and that Walmart also purchased them. 375 amps is insanely bad in the year 2026…not even the “standard” 500 amps! Good news is ABB said they’re deploying liquid cooled NACS cables that match the CCS ones in Q4 2026 per the OOO spec video below. Luckily around me it’s all Alpitronic, likely due to them having their USA HQ in Charlotte.

I don’t have the count of RAN sites that do 650 amps, but it’s listed on the back of hardware at the site. One could make an assumption all RAN sites that have NACS support 650 amps, as Rivian didn’t start deploying NACS until recently and surely they knew the amps R2 would need at that time. Believe it is all 1.5 dispensers - see recent thread below.

We are hoping Tesla superchargers allow non-Tesla vehicles to get more than 500 amps soon, as they allow Tesla vehicles to do so. Tom from State of Charge said he expects them to at some point.

I went and checked my old Tesla CCS adapter, and it's not rated for the kind of amperage the R2 can pull from DC fast chargers.
Just use native NACS. Plenty of options available. Adapters should die.
Not surprised that a 3 year old adapter isn't rated for today's draw. I would never have tried that.

Adapters are the way for now, since there are so many stations and vehicles with the various connector types. Stinks but it is the way.

For me I never have needed to use a CCS station. With the ubiquitous nature of Tesla superchargers there's always one around when traveling. I don't want to go out of my way to a less reliable CCS station and also use an adapter. Everyone is different but I know when I pull up to a supercharger it'll just work and I'll have no issues. Not to mention IONNA, Walmart, MB, and RAN all native NACS available.

Agreed. I have an R1S with the CCS port. On my road trips, I've DC fast charged without an adapter maybe once....meaning I'm almost always using chargers with NACS cables. This includes a visit to a RAN station where all the CCS stalls were taken and I used the adapter to use one of the NACS stalls. I don't foresee needing an adapter for my R2 and, if I do use one, it will be a rarity

Yep, I of course own a CCS adapter if a crazy situation ever occurred. But R2 has a native NACS port in the correct spot for superchargers, so why go out of your way for something else and use an adapter? Won’t be blocking anyone and feeling the hate if the site is busy lol. Happy to use Walmart Alpitronic NACS, IONNA, MB, and RAN too, it’s just superchargers are everywhere and easy.

I know people love their TSC but I have had similar experience with them like everything else. Most of the time it is amazing but sometimes it sucks. With the number of current CCS vehicles around and the chargers supporting them we will have adapters for a bit. I go to the nearest charger, period regardless of cable type.

With the number of current CCS vehicles around and the chargers supporting them we will have adapters for a bit. I go to the nearest charger, period regardless of cable type.
I only charge on road trips and use the trip planner, so I can’t foresee a time where I’ll need to stop at a CCS station to charge. On the drive from NJ to Boston though there are plenty of options for both. Not saying you are wrong just based on my experience it isn't as easy to be 100% one type of connector.

UL 2252 certification validates multi-standard EV charging adapters
This UL standard tests current capability, temperature, and arcing. I am not familiar with the amount of overhead required to pass, but would assume it is at least 1.5X rated spec. In the world of mounting AV stuff to the wall, the load test is 4X rated load.

UL is a credible safetey criteria, I would not buy an adapter that did not take the engineering time to meet UL Standards.

I am new to EV's so I would like to understand exactly what you are saying? From how I see the Rivian Adapter it can handle lower constant amps but can only accept up to 500amps for a short time which would mean it is not capable of supporting the full potential charging amperage of the R2? I think the R2 would only charge above 500amps for a short period so this may be ok?
Hey there, I might be able to help if you’re new to EVs, I sell Rivians, and before this worked for 5 1/2 years at BMW teaching customers about EVs, that’s also including BMW dealers themselves… So what you need to know and the easiest way to understand it is that the vehicle, charger, cable and adapter negotiate the charging rate together, and the lowest safe limit wins.

Also, amps alone don’t tell us charging speed. Power is voltage × amperage. The R2 is roughly a 400-volt-class vehicle, so:
  • 500 amps at 400 volts is about 200 kW
  • 600 amps at 400 volts is about 240 kW
The R2 has reportedly pulled a little over 600 amps near its peak under ideal conditions, so yes, a CCS adapter limited to 500 amps could potentially trim the very top of the charging curve. But that doesn’t mean it is unsafe or incompatible. The R2 would simply request no more current than the adapter and charger can safely provide.

The important distinction is whether “500 amps” is the adapter’s continuous limit (which is a temperature-dependent limit, or a short-duration/boost rating). A 500-amp-rated liquid-cooled connector may sometimes operate above that briefly while monitoring temperature, but we shouldn’t assume that unless Rivian publishes the adapter’s exact continuous and peak specifications, and as a general rule I tell all customers, if it’s not on rivians website or the physical adaptor itself, don’t assume anything!

Now since I see this daily, in real-world charging, the R2 only reaches maximum current at a low state of charge and under ideal battery-temperature conditions. The current then declines as the battery fills(this is common among EVs especially NMC chemistry, Rivian uses a high nickel NMCA Battery chemistry in the 4695 cylindrical cells in the R2 and upcoming R3) so an adapter restriction may affect only the initial peak rather than the entire 10–80% session.

And because the R2 has a native NACS port, the CCS adapter is primarily for accessing CCS chargers. It isn’t required when using a compatible native-NACS charger. Since your new to EVs Just know that you can tell your Rivian in the map to only show you chargers that don’t require an adapter to make life easier. Rivian officially quotes approximately 30 minutes from 10–80%, rather than promising a specific current for the whole session.

Thank you for the very detailed and thought out response, I should have amended my statement that I am new to EV's and know ZERO about electricity so this is all very helpful and new to me. I am pretty eager to learn about the ins and outs of EV charging and just the overall mindset change vs an ICE vehicle.
