R1S for a Family of 7-Thoughts

The newborn will obviously be in a car seat. Is the 5-year-old still in a car seat, or a booster? (My grandson just turned 6 and is still in a car seat, though he is a little small for his age). The anchor points in the 2nd row are pretty close together (they are a ways inboard of the doors, which is great for safety, but not for max passengers on the bench).

If you have two car seats in the second row, you definitely can't fit a third, and if you want a person to sit between the car seats they have to be pretty small (maybe the 8yo?). In my wife's Model X, I can just fit between 2 car seats in the 2nd row. But I can't do that in the R1S. But then with car seats in both outward positions, it's harder to get anyone in the back row.

I know the Escalade has been mentioned...perhaps the Vistiq would also work, and be more financially friendly? I haven't been in one, but my camper van is built on the same platform and has the same software, and I am pretty happy with it.

Not sure what everyone is saying here, I have a full house and load up all 7 people on trips and the amount of cargo space is insane. You have behind the 3rd row you have both the sub-trunk , the actual space behind the 3rd row and the frunk. If you need more cargo (which I've never had to and I load up), you could put a storage container on the top and also a cargo carrier on the hitch. If you need more space, it's time to bring a trailer.

If you are close enough to the place you did the demo drive, sign up for an overnight demo drive. That way you can take it home and kit it out and go for a drive with everything in it, fit it in your garage (if you have one), play with arrangements without worrying about time.

It's been a # of years since I had little ones, but the newborn car seat will end up locking you into only one entry for the back (I think) not being able to adjust the seat forward enough to get in the 3rd row???

Since the kids are mostly older I actually think it’s a decent option but road tripping would be difficult to fit everything unless you had one of these:

5/8 yo in back third row, infant car seat in the middle seat, center, then 13/10 on either side…

When road tripping now we use a box off the hitch on the back so that would be a definite. Getting into/ out of the back do you feel that would be a pain?

I had no idea that was an option. When we got the Tesla it was when they did the seven day test drive to buy and that really helped with decision making as we could try all configurations. I will reach out to Rivian about that.

Are your older kids taller? My daughter is nearly 5'9" and was quite cramped in the third row when we had company staying with us. My youngest is still in a booster seat, so he stayed in the second row. I think it would be fine around town, my daughter had some longer rides in the third row of nearly an hour one way, but said she wouldn't want to do much more than that. If you take a lot of road trips it may be a no, unless you are fine with renting a minivan or Suburban for the road trip.
