Rivian Tells Some R2 Owners To Pause DC Fast Charging

I have VIN 1619 and have not been contacted. I have yet to DC fast charge my R2. It would be nice to know if I’m going to have any issues as I have a road trip planned for next month.

Actually took a spur of the moment Disneyland trip with one of my daughters. I’ll post tomorrow breaking down the drive from Vegas to Anaheim and back. But the first DCFC of my R2 was yesterday. No issues other than Tesla limiting the charging speed at their Yermo location.

Dead last because Consumer Reports doesn't understand software-based cars. They think a bug in software should be counted like a defective drivetrain.

I suspect this might reflect how CR calculates reliability. If there are a lot of minor issues, the owner may still love the vehicle, but CR might see the number of issues as an indicator of low reliability. It doesn't necessarily mean that the vehicle is total failure prone.

In any survey of quality and reliability, I would like to see the issues categorized something like this: (1) required a tow truck to rescue the vehicle, (2) significant inconvenience but vehicle still drivable [e.g. loss of A/C], (3) minor inconvenience that does not affect drivability [e.g. power window is flakey].

Almost nobody wants a car that has to be towed multiple times [or even once]. Some people are just fine putting up with some number of minor inconveniences while others might call it a lemon.

There may be some interest in the following links to some observations regarding Consumer Reports (and JD Power) surveys given the recent posts. Alex from Alex on Autos aka Auto Buyers Guide did these videos about a year ago on the challenges associated with both the car reliability surveys from both companies.

The too-long-didn't-watch take away is that there are significant sample size issues due to the relatively low rate of responses versus in CR's case. Its worth watching them just to understood the significant challenge CR has in collecting adequate data, not just on different models within a manufacturer, but that they don't get enough responses on some brands to rate them at all. For example they haven't had enough responses to rate Chrysler, Dodge, Mercedes Benz and quite a few other brands.

I stopped trusting CR many years ago and stopped reading then. It feels to me that have some strong biases, regardless of what they say their testing is or isn’t. But that’s just my opinion. Trust them if you choose, I choose not to.

This is an excellent point that I think is often overlooked.

Case in point, I think my truck sounds and rides like a broken hay wagon, and is unacceptable. Another engineer in the company has a '22 that sounds and rides exactly the same and he's just fine with it. Doesn't mean I don't have a problem, or that he does have a problem. Our expectations are different.

This, however, is not unique to Rivian as a brand.
