When I first heard about this I thought it couldn't possibly be true. It's such a basic "feature" that just about any car with a power lift hatch has it. How did they miss in this - especially being a $60k, tech-heavy vehicle? I'm going to have to have a chat with RJ.
I can't see why it couldn't be addressed with an OTA, and it sounds like (hopefully) it will be.

Don't forget iX3 and EX60, those are both good to compare in this size class too. I'm encouraged that Rivian is aware of the tailgate being a problem and Wassym said they are working on it. Fingers crossed it can be retrofitted via software. If they can copy Tesla with the geo targeted height that would be 😍

It's coming in software update soon. If you ordered right now, it'd prob be live before you even can get an R2.
I mean Rivian Assistant and SiriusXM arent available yet, but they are on the R1 lineup. To say the tailgate fix will be imminent is hopeful, but I wouldn't really bet the house on it being "soon".

I don't know if it's just our R2, but we tested trying to stop it by hand before it reaches the full height and it just keeps going. maybe if I put both hands on it and hang on it? but a simple tug will NOT stop it from opening. I was testing it to see if it will be in danger of getting damaged if my wife opens it by mistake for now in the garage. and yes, it definitely will be a problem. I'm almost tempted to have her leave the car parked outdoors until this is addressed. All it takes is one phone call, talking to a friend, press button to lift gate - oh crap...

I forsee a lot of people bonking their head on the liftgate if they adjust the stopping height. It's not exceptionally high, it just comes up high relative to the rest of the car.

I am 6'3''. I had to limit how far my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe extends as it would hit my garage motor track. In 10 years I have not bonked my head once. Its not that its super low, its just not 8' high that's all.

It's true - I bonk mine on my land rover hatch a few times a year, but I'd rather feel dumb for a few mins than have to pay to fix a damaged tailgate that raised up too high.

I bonk my head quite a bit on my Model Y that has the liftgate adjusted at my home garage. It's unfortunate. But I just need to be less clumsy... or spend a lot rebuilding a garage.

No need to foresee. My wife is all of 5’0”. She has her EV6 liftgate set so she can reach the button to close it. I’m 5’11” and occasionally bonk it when I go to help unload it after her shopping events. LOL
