Picked up my R2 last Sunday and found as soon as I got home I can't open the rear lift gate without it hitting the header of my carport. I know if you hit the button while it is going up it stops but even after practice I couldn't always get it in time. All my other cars had a height adjustment, even my son's 5 year old Mazda has a height adjustment. Is this a problem for anyone else? Do we think this could be a candidate for an OTA fix?

You are correct that you cannot adjust it. OTA? Sure. Maybe. We don't know.

I'm pretty sure it'll hit in my garage too. Maybe they'll have an update for it by the time I get mine.

I tested mine yesterday and it definitely hits the garage door. I'm thinking I can stop it half way and manually push it up to the desired height.? I could also back it in the garage, but with such a tight squeeze not sure I love that option. I'll probably use the frunk a lot for groceries and such but I don't think my hockey bag will fit in the frunk or through the rear glass.

Been a "concern" of mine as well. I read online (no first hand experience), the R1's do not even have this feature. My 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe has an adjustable lift gate.

Mind me asking - anyone have a measurement of the highest point of the door when fully open?

I read about people installing pool foam noodles and stuff on their garage doors. I may go that route, or just use the frunk mostly. Food shopping is for 2 people so 90% of the time it will fit in the frunk or even the front seat/floor area.

There was another thread where someone posted the measurements when it's open (both rear and vertical extension), but I can't find it right now.

Edit: found it - https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...far-behind-the-rear-bumper.62302/post-1066989
  • Base vehicle length: 185.9 inches
  • Added overhang from open hatch: 15 to 19 inches past the rear bumper
  • Total length (hatch open): ~201 to 205 inches
  • Total vertical height (hatch open): ~83 inches from the ground to the tip of the open gate

Thank you! The back hatch of my RAV4 is 82 inches high when fully open so I think I should be good, hopefully.
that link is handy - but it does say to the tip of the gate. The trunk itself has a slight arc to it, so I wouldn't be shocked if you need to add another 2-3'' to that measurement (to be safe)

thanks @emroch for finding it

That comment was originally sourced from Reddit, though unattributed. A quick search found this post which seems to be accounting for the shape of the hatch in the 83" figure:
Hard to get it exact because we didn’t have a ladder, but conservatively we measured it with a tape measure at 83”, approx 80” to the highest point on the side, and added 3 for the way it bows outward in the middle.

R2 owners, you may want to submit feedback about this needed feature. Via your mobile app, scroll down to the bottom and you will see a share feedback option. The more the merrier!

I have the same issue. The door is 7 foot high. My wife’s Genesis GV60 has the height adjustment and it works great.

It's hard to be precise, but I measured ~84.5" to the crest of the gate when it's open, back when we discussed this in early July at the link @emroch already shared: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/do-i-risk-damaging-the-lift-gate-motor.61172/

This is a very questionable decision by Rivian given cheaper cars offer height adjustment, but they also don't offer it on R1 so I don't see any OTA avenue here or they could have addressed it in the past few years. My hunch is that R1 is such a large vehicle, that it prevented people like me with smaller garages from purchasing it. So with R2, there seem to be quite a few people with smaller garages bringing this up as a concern and I hope Rivian hears the feedback from this new cohort.

It would have complicated my life almost daily and just not a headache I need - so I will not buy R2 until they offer this. I was given the opportunity to order R2 this week and it broke my heart to say no.

If they add this feature with the new chips/lidar refresh then I'm ordering right away. I did submit this to their customer service, but never heard anything back. As others have stated - the only way to change this is if everyone writes into Rivian and asks for it.
