It's a Tesla competitor in price and size and roughly range though.
I think they’re considered competitors mostly because Rivian said so, plus the fancy tech and FSD stuff. That’s about it. IMHO, the Toyota bZ Woodland and Subaru Trailseeker are closer competitors to the R2 as actual vehicles than the Tesla, especially now that it turns out they have very similar real-world range to the R2 because of their surprisingly good efficiency.

please just state the high level take away you want people to have from all your posts . 1 sentence maximum.

it sort of feels like you’re yelling and screaming my at us “hey guys the sky is blue” . And we are all saying “ dude, we know, the sky is blue , we got it , what’s your point ?”

I think we can all be pretty patient , but if you can distil down your take away point . And accept that people have a different view . I’m just gonna have to ignore and every thread you start. I know that won’t be a huge loss to you, I don’t expect it to be . But it might be indicative of how others are feeling .

everyone else. I’m new ish here. I am sorta suprised how long this has gone on, and how much AI slop / bot use is tolerated long term . Is this normal?

With more than 100 R2s now appearing in the Roamer dataset, one result is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: despite the 330-mile headline range, we still don’t have a single recorded R2 drive reaching 260 miles.

The longest is Out of Spec at 256 miles and 2.80 mi/kWh. The next two are 244 miles at 2.90 mi/kWh and 239 miles at 2.91 mi/kWh. In fact, among the 10 longest trips—all over 200 miles—the highest efficiency is just 2.91 mi/kWh.

That’s important because a ~90-kWh battery would need approximately 3.67 mi/kWh to travel 330 miles. By comparison, sustained long-distance R2 highway performance is clustering much closer to the high-2s, with the best long runs around 2.9 mi/kWh.

There are shorter trips above 3.0 mi/kWh, so it would be too strong to say the R2 cannot exceed 2.9. It clearly can under favorable speeds and conditions. What the data have not yet demonstrated is the ability to sustain anything close to the ~3.6–3.7 mi/kWh necessary for 330 miles over a long highway trip.

At roughly 2.8–2.9 mi/kWh, a 90-kWh usable battery translates to approximately 252–261 miles. At ~70 mph, the existing data suggest something closer to the 240–250-mile neighborhood.

That’s the critical distinction: 330 miles may be the rated number, but the growing real-world dataset is increasingly defining the R2’s actual highway-range envelope—and so far, nobody has cracked 260 miles.

It may be time to bring out the GIMP; the Gap In Measured Performance. The 21” was supposed to be the R2’s range king, but after multiple independent tests and tens of thousands of miles of owner data, that advantage is still nowhere to be found. The EPA numbers say there should be a meaningful gap; the pavement says otherwise. At some point, when the predicted advantage repeatedly fails to appear in the measurements, you have to stop arguing about the rating and start asking why the GIMP exists.

EPA ratings haven't matched actual performance for decades on both ICE and many EVs, and the reasons are well documented for anyone who wants to do a deep dive.
If the R2 isn't enough range for you, then don't buy one!
If you feel the EPA methods are so messed up, go work for the EPA and improve the rating programs!

What’s interesting is that almost all car media and EV influencers test EVs at around 75 mph, get results way below the posted total EPA range, and then state that the car’s real-world range is far below EPA. I don’t believe they don’t know what the EPA range actually represents or how to calculate range based on the MPGe numbers on the window sticker. The only reason I can think of is to get more attention, views, and shares. Basically, clickbait.

You appear extremely ignorant based on this...if you'd like to actually be part of the conversation then maybe do the homework/research...but I guess thanks for coming out of the woodwork to fling your opion around?

At this point, show me the data to backup your points/argument (mk has a long history of not being able to do that). He and others have resorted to namecalling, arm waving...all you have to do is look back to early July timeframe to see evolution of the range debate (some even went so far as to delete all their BS/namecalling/misinformed posts)...for the MK types and other opinon/no-facts people...you can get lost (or ignored)...totally up to you!

And above all else please don't come around with the pedantic "hard-earned" money remarks...

I don't read as many car reviews as I used to..... are automotive journalists doing this for ICE vehicles too, or just EVs? Seems kinda lopsided if they don't....

Not really, at least I don’t remember ICE reviews being framed this way. If they test a gas car at 75 mph, they usually compare the result to EPA highway MPG, not combined MPG.
With EVs it’s common to see “EPA says 330 miles, we only got 260 at 75 mph” even though 330 is the combined rating. The 75 mph test itself is useful, but comparing it directly to combined EPA range makes the result look much worse than it really is, and they do this to get more attention like:

I don't think its just about not hitting EPA. Rivian kinda set itself up for failure in this regard because it directly compared itself to the Model Y Performance on range and shot itself in the foot. Should have just left it alone and not made the direct comparison as that really set unrealistic expectations.

If the comparison was never made, I think this issue would have been dropped a long time ago.

In general, don't take anything stated at face value. Do the analysis yourself using facts and see if they make sense using science. 2.9 miles /kWh at highway speed makes a whole lot of sense for a rolling box on wheels with the given frontal area and tire selection. Then you do the math for yourself. Efficiency at highway speed with known battery capacity = possible range. Simple as that. R1s are around 2.1 miles / kWh at similar highway speeds I believe? For reference, my Polestar2 is around 3.3 miles / kWh at highway speeds. First approximation checks out, somewhat boxy sedan with lower aero drag and less frontal area than the R2 has better efficiency at highway speed.

If you want range, get a Lucid air. Aerodynamic, low drag sedan profile, low frontal area, skinny low drag tires and aero wheels.

They kind of match the EPA numbers only if you drive exactly like the EPA test, use Eco mode all the time, and once you drive a bit faster or floor it in all purpose mode to enter highway, they become extremely inefficient compared to Tesla and others that remain somewhat more efficient.

But it can do offroad
