I guess I'll have to pay a couple more bucks to fuel up the Vespa. And I'll probably be getting some EV questions from my friends. I'm beginning to regret that fortune cookie that said, "May You Live in Interesting Times!".

I wonder if the consumer economics (gas shock) will reign in what is happening.
Despite overall affordability problem, people still have to drive to work and take kids to school and to wherever. They either have to cut back in other areas or take on more revolving debt, or both. This isn't uncharted territory. It's happened many times and each time with long lasting effects—like shrinking middle class and more people falling behind with each economic event. More and more people become jaded and point fingers. The disagreements become more and more polarizing. The pendulum swings over and over.

And through each of these events, have oil companies fallen back and never post another "highest ever" earnings report? Ha. No.

"Grab your ankles and hang on" is probably the only constant.

There's a lot of ways this can go. With gulf production being shut down because of lack of transport, this could get bad pretty fast.

The number I saw is that about 6m/bpd of production could go offline if transport isn't resumed in the next few weeks. That's about 6% of global oil production, and prices could skyrocket.

Of course, there could be a declaration of "mission accomplished" (regardless of actual results) and the whole thing is over tomorrow. That's probably what will happen the moment things actually get bad.

Sustained, $90+ oil will do more for the energy transition than EV tax credits ever would.

I'm grateful I cut my dependence on hydrocarbons over the last five years. My home and vehicles are all electric, and it's solar powered. My last two things powered by hydrocarbons are my propane bbq and my backpacking stove. I think I'll be alright. Now is still a good time to make these changes in your life.
I haven't made the switch yet to electric heat. My bro has and likes it. Hopefully I'll get there one day. Happy i m mostly independent ish.

I don't want to wildly speculate or get too political, but just saw this while doomscrolling. Does anyone think this sort of thing - if it happens - could negatively affect our friends over at Lucid?

Tbh, I really just hate to see any EV company fail or suffer in this economy - when we should be buying more of them, not fewer. 😢

And here I am trying to convince my extended family to buy EVs, since I got mine 2 years ago.

I keep giving our fuel points earned from the grocery store to friends since we have two ev's (and a 4runner that hardly gets driven). I also added mini splits to our house and power it all from solar. Hopefully the gas price shock will encourage more people to consider an ev.

I don't think they are serious. I think they are practicing diplomacy: saying one thing while doing another.

While the people on my local community forums b*tch & moan, I'm loving our $0.05 cent electric rates right about now. Although I wish I had solar, "filling up" for around $6 ain't too shabby. 😆

Ugh I'm at $.06/KWH and the extra 20% over your rate is killing me, how am I going to pay for cable?

This unfortunately would be very bad news for Lucid if it comes to pass

It's short term effect. Both oil and gas prices will drop before the summer driving season.
And I believe the price of oil will get worse and remain high for an extended period. Long enough that fuel surcharges will be back raising the price of about everything.

Time will tell. Glad to be on electric for sure.

Biggest raise I ever got from work was a take home car that is filled with City gas. We are already in March and I think I filled my personal F150 back in December. Almost bought a used Lucid recently, but can't really justify even having a second EV at this point.

Sorry, I was out hugging my solar panels this morning as my R1T did it's normal morning scheduled top-off. What were you saying about oil?

13.2kWh solar architecture on our home.

We made the heavy investment 5 years ago, and for nine months out of the year, our home is 100% carbon neutral; now including two EV's in the garage and L2 charging. I am currently working with our solar vendor to add additional panels to our architecture to shorten the 3-month winter gap even more.

On ICE vehicles; what I really love is the TORQUE of my R1T-Dual (yes, DUAL). Especially when I am sitting next to some dolt in their raised pick-up, gunning it at the light thinking he's all that. And the light changes and I don't even have to tromp the pedal, but I can get from zero to 60 and a half block down the road in about 5 seconds while he's still trying to get through the previous intersection. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Smug? Of course! Earned? F-ing yeah! And that little stunt cost me... what? $0.50 in electricity? Not $2 in gas. But I digress.

We read the tea leaves a long time ago. I am retired, husband plans to be joining me in 18 months. We're beginning to realize the overall cost savings. We're glad we went down the routes.

So... cost of oil? Hmmm... interesting.

Not sure why there are so many glib people here. Even if you fill up with electric and power your home with solar, the ripple effect on fuel prices raising the cost of everything else and depressing the economy is just plain bad news for everyone.
