Here's a charging dilemma that I haven't seen elsewhere on the forum. It first occurred while road tripping last summer. I charged to 80% ish at a Tesla station, at around 220 kw, and everything seemed normal until I stopped the charge and tried to drive away. Pressing the brake did not allow me to switch into drive and I got a cascade of errors on the dash. TPMS warning, power steering failure, brake failure etc. It took three hard resets to clear all the codes and then it was like nothing ever happened.
It happened again at other Tesla stations on a separate trip from Vancouver to Calgary, so I dropped it at the Calgary service centre for a week. They were unable to replicate the problem, and didn't have enough diagnostic info to do anything. When I picked it up and drove home I decided to not precondition the battery before fast charging, and this seemed to be the workaround as it didn't happen again. Until this last month. I charged at a Tesla station that I hadn't been to before, did not precondition the battery, and it froze up worse than before taking 4 reboots to get me back on the road. I don't know what the battery temps were on the previous episodes but this last one was up to 49C after the charge session.
Curious if anyone has seen anything like this or has some speculation as to the culprit. I'm inclined to think it's heat related as most of our non-Tesla stations top out at 150kw and none of them has ever caused an issue. But is it a module? The charging harness? A coolant or battery issue? I have no idea.
It's going in for service tomorrow, so we'll see what they have to say. Thanks for reading and for any thoughts you might have.
