Finally granted shop access. January 2021 preorder. With an August delivery date scheduled, I'm not really sure I would jump on anything in the shop at this point and will likely wait for my R1S to be built.

That stinks. I don't think you will get anywhere chatting with the Rivian folks online. If you want to jump the line ahead of folks who have been waiting longer than you for their R1S, your best bet is to book a test drive and plead your case for shop access to the Rivian employee in person.

But how did you gain access to the shop? I'm a January, 2021 R1S preorder and Rivian keeps telling me that shop access is still limited to 2020 preorders and earlier.

Classic Rivian response. I've been given this same response when I asked for shop access. Blatent lies about who is getting shop access. When I told them of the numerous folks here who have gotten shop access with reservations in 2022, they had no response.
