Yep, they figured out a while back that they needed a small lithium battery for Gear Guard and system startup that had more capacity than a small lead acid 12V battery.
Tesla eventually figured out they needed a smaller LFP battery to replace the 12V battery system...it's useful for their Gear Guard/Sentry feature too.
Other EV makers like Hyundai and Kia have also been hit with early 12V battery failures so it's not just Rivian.
Hopefully we'll see a small...

This sounds pretty modern...800V architecture and two speed transmission.
Should mean better highway mileage than usual for an EV from the two speed transmission...
Not really a surprise... Much more efficient motors...better aero...700lbs lighter... No speed limiter at 130...a few more horsepower.
If anything, I was surprised how close the quad was...I thought the Lucid would easily beat it.
And the Panemera was a surprise... Didn't think an ICE car...
FWIW, I've read stories about it dying on the way home from initial pickup and also it dying within the first week of ownership.
It's sad that this happens but it does happen occasionally even on ICE cars...
FWIW, this happens with dashcams too...they sometimes don't record if the impact is sudden enough.
That said, I agree Gear Guard should have worked...running a backup dashcam isn't a bad idea though...
