Well mine is having the same behavior. Pushing and holding the button it will close all the way but just pushing the button it stops short about 1" on each open and close.

Almost positive they are aluminum, they have the feel and rigidity of it. I would be very surprised if they were plastic.

I'm good with hidden, reason being, it will get scratched up by hitches and if sprayed with salt in the winter, rust. My tundra is only a couple years old and the hitch is an eyesore because of it. I like the choice.

I got hit with the 12v drain problem and have been very nervous the truck will brick itself again. Glad there seems to be a fix. I'm tired of being on edge that it will fail at any point. I've been measuring the 12v batteries every time I take it out to try and avoid getting stranded.

Supposedly mobile service will be here tomorrow morning to see what they can do. They will be bringing new 12V batteries.

I really, really want a service manual. For this issue, we have 2 batteries and I'll bet they are not in parallel. Also, the wires to the back of the truck are not directly connected (0 volt reading). I really wish I could find out what is going on.
