I drive in all kinds of snow in the Sierras and I have never felt the need for dedicated snow tires. I find ATs with the 3-peak certification to be all I need. I keep them on year around and also use in desert and on trails in the warmer seasons. YMMV.

I think it’s natural to second guess ourselves when these things happen but it sounds like the situation may have been more than even a 4x4 with snow/AT tires could overcome.
