  1. Front License Plates

Hopefully all the bumpers will have provisions for a winch, and then the fairlead holes could be used for a bracket. I use a flip up bracket with a hawse fairlead on my 4runner; the bracket is made by Tuffy. When it's down it hides the winch and hook and just flips up out of the way if the...
  2. Gas-in Electric (as opposed to Plug-in Hybrid)

For camping trips far from any plugs, get a converted vw van from solarrolla.com:D
  3. Gas-in Electric (as opposed to Plug-in Hybrid)

That mileage estimate is much closer to what I would have guessed. Our BMW I3 with range extender is a serial hybrid if the range extender is running, and it only gets about 35mpg at around 70mph on the few times I've taken it out of town, and its 35hp engine barely keeps up at that speed. If...
  4. R1S vs Model X

I'm also looking to the r1s to replace our minivan and take over some of the utility and uses of our 4runner. Much more than taking market share from luxury suv's I hope it also sways a lot of the people buying a Tahoe/Yukon/Expedition/ Sequoia etc. The price of the r1s is very similar to the...
  5. Full size spare external placement

A rack, spare tire or a bunch of other gear on the roof is going to really cut into range. I'm a fan of the receiver mounted spare tire carrier that can be taken off. Also the frunk should be a great location for recovery gear.
  6. Truckload of R1T spotted heading to Colorado

I'm tempted to drive up there to try to check them out. I wonder if they will be staying in the same place each night?
  7. Real Rivian Photos & Videos

Just make sure you have the tools along as well! Honestly it takes a lot of force to bend a tie rod; they were probably trying to give the rivian a 'Moab bump' up the obstacle and the tire probably got forced inward from a rock as it was trying to climb.
  8. Real Rivian Photos & Videos

It looks like they are on the main trail but ifs tie rods in general seem to be susceptible to bending when the front tires are trying to pull hard on an obstacle. This puts the tie rod in compression instead of tension like during braking and so it wants to buckle. It is worse if the front...
  9. Rivian to Tell Its Own Tale from the Trans-America Trail

They are trail markers painted on the rock. They let you know where the trail goes especially if there's a steep hill that you need to turn down. The trail is obvious in that picture but surprisingly the rock will often be clean in the spring before water jeep safari. Also less popular trails...
  10. Delivery / Destination fee?

If an unfavorable tax credit gets passed, here's hoping for a lower msrp and higher delivery fee to squeak in under a cutoff price!
  11. ? Official EPA Range and MPGe Numbers for R1T & R1S

I looked up the dodge Durango hellcat for fun since a lot of specs are similar to the r1s (size, power, 0-60, price-88k as motortrend tested it). In the motortrend article reviewing it I thought it was entertaining to see the kwh/100 miles listed (converted from gas used). The city economy is...
  12. Off-roading Newb Question

I like using the Charles wells books which were mentioned earlier and its nice to have all the trails rated by difficulty and a description of what to expect. I'm lucky to be in an area with countless miles of roads and trails on national forest and blm land as well as some areas in the desert...
  13. Off-roading Newb Question

You can search for local 4x4 clubs in your area and look up national, state or county forest land near you. If you are near a national forest then download the MVUM (multi vehicle use map) for it to know which roads and trails are legal for vehicles.
  14. Rivian waypoint chargers spotted!! Located at Under Canvas (Moab)

I kind of see it like hotels or other businesses that choose to install level 2 chargers; its an amenity to their customers and may draw in more customers.
  15. Rivian waypoint chargers spotted!! Located at Under Canvas (Moab)

He mentioned that these chargers (and probably the whole camp) are powered by a solar array. I can see a good sized array in the satellite view but my guess is they are still tied to the grid. I will be out there next weekend so I might stop by to check it out.
  16. Rivian waypoint chargers spotted!! Located at Under Canvas (Moab)

These are level 2 chargers, so it would take a full night to recharge if the battery is very low. There is also free level 2 and 50kw charging downtown Moab at the office of the local power company right across the street from the rec center.
  17. Rivian waypoint chargers spotted!! Located at Under Canvas (Moab)

A couple of waypoint chargers (level 2) installed at Under Canvas just north of Moab. These chargers (and probably the whole camp) are powered by a solar array. Have any other waypoint chargers been spotted? Also this article from this spring mentioned Rivian attempting to find a...
  18. ? Official EPA Range and MPGe Numbers for R1T & R1S

I forgot that people with launch edition vehicles can switch between wheel sizes without a price premium (correct?) I don't have a launch edition pre-order but if I did then I probably would go with the 20" wheels so future tire changes would be simpler. Regarding renewable energy credits, I...
  19. ? Official EPA Range and MPGe Numbers for R1T & R1S

I'm pleased with the official range numbers, and I plan on sticking with 21's. I figure it makes more sense to go with the included set and then possibly look at getting more aggressive tires and 20's in the future instead of spending more on the 20's and then trying (hoping?) to find something...
  20. What Else Are You Considering?

I hadn't been thinking about the electric cost since I put solar on our house and oversized it anticipating another electric vehicle and electrifying our home heating. It's nice to not care about rate increases like the 13% that we are getting from xcel. Also doing it myself means about a 4 year...
