  1. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

We wanted to go into Kodachrome but with the short hours of daylight at this time of year (and shorter after trying to get kids moving!) we knew we wouldn't be able to spend enough time there to do it justice. It's good to know they have power and good bathrooms for a future trip!
  2. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

That's what's frustrating with taking pictures of these areas; when you're there you can just stare and be amazed, and then you try to capture it in a picture and it's not the same! Here's a good 'spot the person' picture from last week:)
  3. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

Just for fun, trying to go back up the steep hill I came down into the wash where peekaboo canyon starts. Always hard to get the steepness perspective in a video! The main trail is much easier!
  4. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

Driving out of the lower parking area of White Pocket. After seeing videos of people getting stuck on this hill, it was much less drama than I expected!
  5. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

On our last day we checked out the sand caves just north of Kanab, went through the Best Friends animal sanctuary so the kids could beg for more pets, and went out to peek-a-boo (or red) canyon. The route out to the canyon was much deeper sand than the day before, especially since I took 102L...
  6. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

The next day we went out to Wire Pass, a slot canyon that joins the Buckskin Gulch slot canyon in the Vermillion Cliffs national monument. I aired down to 30psi shortly after getting onto House Rock Valley Road because it had a lot of washboard and loose chunky rock on it. After wire pass we...
  7. Exploring southern Utah slot canyons over New Years

I took my family on a trip to southern Utah over New years in order to do some desert exploring. Our first day was traveling from western Colorado to Escalante, Utah with a short detour into Capitol Reef national park to hike down capitol gorge. We arrived at the canyon county lodge with 12% and...
  8. Driving on soft sand / beach with Dual Motor?

I don't know if the speed is limited in offroad mode. I know that the height drops from high to normal at 45; it will drop from highest at some speed less than that. I've been pleased with how smooth the dual motor is at low speeds through rough terrain, even in snow mode.
  9. Driving on soft sand / beach with Dual Motor?

My 2025 dual motor max pack came with tow hooks without the offroad package. I think the standard battery dual motor versions don't come with tow hooks. Also I don't have the performance upgrade so I prefer to use snow mode on mild trails and then switch to offroad mode when the terrain gets...
  10. California to White Pocket, AZ in our R1S

Great trip report! I was just looking into how to get to white pocket because we may be doing a trip to Escalante and Kanab around new years to explore some of the area.
  11. Range extender for R1T in the future?

An additional battery pack would most certainly take away from payload, so even if it were only 800-1000 pounds (to provide possibly an extra 100kwh) there wouldn't be a lot of capacity left for people/stuff, not to mention trailer tongue weight.
  12. Learned more Rivian Gen 2 tech updates / differences to Gen 1

Yes almost certainly. Hopefully with the changes discussed earlier it lasts much longer.
  13. Learned more Rivian Gen 2 tech updates / differences to Gen 1

I have a gen 2 R1S so I decided to investigate the 12v relocation. There is a panel under the front of the passenger seat that easily pops off to see a little bit of the 12v battery (green in the picture). The negative battery cable connects to the body under that panel as well. I also checked...
  14. R1S Spare tire hitch mount options?

The padding is a good idea. I still have some rubber sheet that I used on the lower vertical part so when the pin is in it doesn't rattle. EDIT: I added a couple layers of thick wide electrical tape to the tire carrier where the taillight would contact.
  15. I wish there was a better option for carrying a full size spare on road trips

Double posting, but I just built a spare tire carrier using a 12" hitch extension, part of a folding bike rack and other parts that I had. The tire folds back just enough to allow the hatch to open, and the tailgate just clears as well.

  17. Clunking sound from front end.

RCV axles are great (I have them in my 4runner's solid front axle) but they have their own noise issues. My friend put them in his Jeep's front axle and they make some horrible clicking and screeching noises even with fresh grease. They're strong but not silent!
  18. Updated Maximum Payload Ratings

My payload rating for the gen 2 R1S with max pack (which is the only option we added) is higher than I've seen before, over 1800lbs! We'll be doing some more towing and adventuring this weekend; 100 miles to Green River to camp, then 50 miles of dirt road each way to hike horseshoe canyon.
  19. New hotfix: 2024.39.32

This update finally let me use Halloween mode on my gen 2 R1S again!
