I'm skeptical of a jump starter working as they are made to deliver huge amps(700+) but only for one second to an ICE vehicle. The Rivian needs decent amps (30) but for a much longer period.
Sounds like jump starters can work if your battery is partially bad or having trouble with a full charge...
Yeah that would defeat the purpose if you have hitch lock key in the vehicle. I don't need a hitch lock. Maybe they have some that are combo locks.
In that use case I'd probably instead use the license plate holder.
I'd prefer to use lifepo as the 12v backup as its much easier to keep the charge maintained as well as lighter. Close to home I may not keep the 12v spare in the vehicle. I have jumper cables and the primary plan would be to use the spare to jump the R1 and wake it so I can drive to a location...
My plan is to put it in a ziplock, maybe use some bubble wrap if needed to prevent rattle
I will put it in this hitch case;

The other option is this on the license plate if you dont want to use the hitch;

You can put the cover back...
Rivian says the R1 needs 30amps to boot, so probably need a larger lifepo. Good news is the 30Ah lifepo with 30amp BMS are the same size as the Rivian lead battery.
I think the main issue simply swapping with lifepo though would be the rivian trying to charge the lifepo to voltages that are...
30amps*240volts is 7200 watts.... thats a huge load. Nothing will be "small-ish" with that power. 30amps at 120volts is 3600 watts (still pretty big but many more options). That bluetti is only 18 amps at 120 volts.
If the only thing your running at 240volts is a well pump I'd get a...
I have the Rivian supercharger adapter they sent me for free that Tesla builds. I'd use that unless unavailable and then would only consider Lectron/A2Z.
The AC adapters I'd just make sure its a quality brand that can do 48amps.
That is what I consider must need - but really all you need. The...
Yes you are correct. I've done some custom work on motorhomes electrical system/solar/inverters so yes I'm aware of the starting/house battery configurations. Some of the complication with the Rivian is that you don't want to ever disconnect the main 12v battery as you'll potentially get error...
So looks like this $70 lifepo battery would fit the LxWxH of 7.1/3.0/7.4 stock Rivian 12v battery
Provides 30A continuous the Rivian needs, while being 30Ah instead of stock 18Ah. AGM also should only be discharged 50% - so thats 9Ah usable vs triple with lifepo. Wouldn't shock me if ohmmu just...
Yeah those are good points. I do have the single battery which makes this simpler. I could just get a similar size AGM as a backup. I prefer the idea of lifepo as it can sit 6 months without being charged. But not sure lifepo is available in that form factor that can deliver 30a continuous.
Tesla has an official CCS adapter to NACS... I own two from when I owned two Teslas.. Initially it was only available in South Korea, then later available in the US Tesla shop.
Yeah I'd always have NACS/CCS/j1772 adapter for any EV I own so it can charge at all spots
If I bought an R1 today...
Yeah, I'd like to stick to a name brand like Noco or battery tender. Surprised the battery tender one doesn't have a desulfinator, unless they just aren't listing the feature. They say it's a "maintainer". Sure I could splice on an SAE but seems like somebody should sell one I don't have to.
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah the goal is being able to boot the vehicle up so it can be driven. My understanding is once the vehicle is booted the HV pack will power dc-dc for 12v so the 12v battery health when the vehicle is awake then shouldn't matter. I suppose you are right a spare battery is...
I see this Noco tender has a desulfinator. Maybe 2amp is a bit easier on the OBD port. I like that it can trickle other Lifepo batteries i have too. Only thing I wish is it had an SAE port to more cleanly connect to the OBD cable...
I just ordered the battery tender 3 amp model

However now I'm wondering if I should get a different tender with a desulfator? From what I can tell the battery...
Does anyone know of jump starters that are powerful enough to wake a dead Rivian 12v?
I had my Tesla Y completely die on Saturday and it was a major PITA getting it resolved - so I want to be proactive and prepared with the Rivian. I will have tools in either a license plate holder or hitch...
