  1. Digital Key Support coming in 2025.46 OTA Update this month

Is this Gen 2 only? I've lost track of what's backward compatible or not.
  2. RAN Rivian Charging Stations Locations Map via Google Maps

Monticello UT is showing online in the app. Anyone close enough to check it out?
  3. R2 in snow & cold temperature testing

This is the first thing I bring up when someone asks me if they need snow tires in Denver. For many people, a snowstorm means school is cancelled and they're working from home while the kids are home for the day. They probably don't need snow tires. I had one (kinda crazy) neighbor that was...
  4. 12-Month review: I can't recommend the R1S for most people

The underlying issue is that Rivian's price point / styling / marketing are targeting the Range Rover crowd. Many (most?) Rivian customers are buying it and their comparison point is the luxury SUV market. Let's be honest, this market is bigger than the market for offroad enthusiasts at...
  5. Preparing my home for an EV charger... advice.

Look into incentives available in your area as well, including state, local, and utility incentives. They're not always well advertised. Some incentives may come with requirements on what you install. Be sure to also look and incentives for landlords, as that will be relevant to your situation.
  6. Rivian May Be Much Closer to FSD Than You Think

The keys to spotting sockpuppet accounts I've found helpful: 1. New accounts (this is a good indicator, but not universal) 2. They only post about one or two topics 3. They hyper-focus on a small number of talking points, which may only be tangentially related to the topic at hand. 4. They...
  7. Rivian May Be Much Closer to FSD Than You Think

When a 2 day old profile pops up on these forums and 100% of the posts are about how Tesla is superior to everyone else, you can safely ignore that person as a bot, troll, or paid actor. It's not the first time it's happened. A brand new profile pops up every time some Tesla relevant thread...
  8. Rivian May Be Much Closer to FSD Than You Think

I don't care enough to read through this whole chain or engage in internet arguments about Tesla. But I know a few people in the industry, and have at least a passing knowledge based on second or third hand comments from people that know what they're talking about. The Economist also had a...
  9. Best Way To Discharge HV Battery?

Get an appropriately rated extension cord and plug in a space heater to heat your house. It won't be the most efficient heating you can get, but at least the energy will go to something productive. Just be careful on the extension cord. Many aren't rated for 1,500W constant draw.
  10. electrek: Electricity is about to become the new base currency and China figured it out [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

Yes, but it does disappear out of the local watershed. This isn't a big deal in parts of the country that have plenty of water. It's a consideration in the west where rivers are drying quickly, and the Colorado river compact seems ready to implode in the next few years. The best info I can...
  11. Gen1 23 R1T Regen was Negative over 5,000ft drop

My experience is similar, although I haven't measured it close enough to give numbers. My drive from east Denver to Silverthorne area is ~40% of the battery, and about 15-20% coming home.
  12. electrek: Electricity is about to become the new base currency and China figured it out [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

Make sure you're doing an inflation adjusted payback. You have to factor in what the price of electricity will be in the future as well as what the price is today. Your payback will be meaningfully closer adding in an electricity inflation factor of ~3%. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if we...
  13. Need R1T Purchase Advice, Buy Now in November or Wait for Better deal in December?

Put some math behind it. Incentives might go up, or they might go down. Take a guestimate. Maybe a $3k change in incentives for December? Maybe nothing? Are the options you want worth $3k to you?
  14. electrek: Electricity is about to become the new base currency and China figured it out [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

You're thinking about hydroelectric. The original comment refers to steam turbines. Power generation involves heating large amounts of water and turning it into steam whether the heat source is coal, gas, or nuclear. One of the benefits in Colorado in shutting coal plants is those water...
  15. New Rival: 2026 Jeep Recon EV revealed. $65,000, 250 miles range, 0-60 3.6s

With Rivian (and most car brands) the low price trim is not designed to sell in volume, but to make the features of the mid-trim feel worth the price. The high-price trim is also not designed to sell in volume, but is designed to make the mid-trim version feel like a relatively good value. I...
  16. New Rival: 2026 Jeep Recon EV revealed. $65,000, 250 miles range, 0-60 3.6s

Jeep is best compared to that hot but crazy chick most of us dated at one point in our twenties. They can look good if you're willing to ignore the fundamental flaws under the hood. You have a lot of fun driving them for a while. Your friends might be slightly jealous for a hot minute...
  17. electrek: Electricity is about to become the new base currency and China figured it out [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

While I like the idea behind this, I don't know how true it is. Wind in particular requires enough capital that it's only effectively deployed at a utility scale. Solar can be distributed AND it makes even more sense deployed at a utility level. It's not a one-or-the other choice. Both...
  18. New Rivian Ad -- Real Rivian Adventures: Milk Run

I agree with your sentiment 100%. Although I admit I used the "I have to go charge the car" excuse a few times while at my in-laws back in 2023. Taking a short drive and a walk during the chaos of Christmas was needed a few times.
