I agree in theory. But there are just too many unknown how this will work in reality. What if I have a trade-in? What if I have outside financing? How do those things get resolved if I decide to return my truck after 7 days?

Based on some discussions I've had with folks "familiar" with the matter, the current hire-to-delivery wait is approximately 3 months for new employees. So that's fun.
The service center employees have been fully educated in Rivian approved language.
Several reports of people being told by the local facility team that test drives will begin “soon”.
Soon is the gift that keeps on giving.
Did he share any additional details? What's the problem? Is it a part supply issue? Does he/she have ANY idea what a real timeline for you might look like?

Nobody knows. It's somewhere greater than 0% and less than 100% of pre-orders.
Edited to add: Some non-scientific surveys of owners show the number to be about 30% of orders. So somewhere in the 20,000 range. But again, nobody knows.
