This is a fundamental misunderstanding of the value of RAP1 and LiDAR. There's no immediate light switch that turns on when they are for sale at the end of the year that makes them better. Years down the road, the platforms will start to diverge in some very very advanced software features...
Some youtube influencers put in reservations as soon as it went live. So they don't even need priority from Rivian. Many of them already own an R1 too and have a local service center. They have content to create and put themselves in line super early on purpose as a business decision. So...
Rivian will have that software option to park the wiper outside the recess. I stuck Wassym's quote in the other wiper thread: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/r2-rear-wiper-in-action-potential-issues-or-fud.58581/post-1005973
In the recent Reddit AMA, Wassym talked about how R2 infotainment is actually 1 generation ahead of R1. New infotainment available at launch. R2 will eventually be able to run local AI models for Rivian Assistant.
R2 infotainment is actually 1 generation ahead of R1.
I posted the quotes in a new thread just now to get the word out: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/r2-infotainment-update-local-ai-models-and-higher-performance-than-r1.59467/
Still the nature of the beast with lead acid. Going to have to replace them, but at least they are cheap. The Tesla LFP low voltage will far outlast a lead acid so you get a lot of long term reliability that way. Different approaches.
But it's nice to see that Rivian is at least making lead...
Quote from Wassym in the Reddit AMA about the wiper in R2. Software setting to park the wiper outside the trough. Also added a pic of the testing which macb00kemdanno put in the next post.
It ramps up. You don't start at max production on day 1 in auto manufacturing. The most important number for 2026 is the production rate in December. You want the factory cranking them out by the end of the year as 2027 is the big volume year for R2.
You're getting your R2 faster because of that presser. Rivian is getting $827 million in incentives from the State of Illinois for R2 production.
We might not have got info out of it as customers, but Rivian and RJ are getting massive amounts of help from IL.
They've stated that initially the LiDAR use case is largely for data collection. They haven't talked about how useful LiDAR will be on a daily basis soon after it is launched. So somewhere between less useful to not useful at all since they haven't talked about it at that level. They've only...
Press conference is starting. Started off badly with a data center question which has nothing to do with Rivian.
Edit: Looks like the Q&A is a bust too. The end.
Yeah, I wasn't sure what it was when I posted. Not sure there will be anything significant talked about. Rivian's getting incentives from the state for R2 production so probably all celebrating that the incentives are working.
The "first R2 customer deliveries" in the thread title isn't from...
https://www.illinois.gov/about/live-video.html
RJ and the IL Governor are there.
Edit: An event to note the start of R2 production in IL. No new info for customers.
Recent VIN numbers at the factory were spotted in the event per this other thread...
Same. Compute has mattered a lot up until now. Puts people like me who are leaning towards wanting more autonomy in a bit of a pickle as buying Gen 2 is like saying "this time is different" without any software released.
Tesla's already planning out two generations ahead for compute with AI5...
