Another way R1 will be the gift that keeps on giving (to Rivian).
How many vehicles with built in SSDs for music/nav/etc available now have an SSD that is owner serviceable?

There is no way it would be an HDD. The bumps and g forces would destroy it in short order.
That's exactly why I mentioned it. I'm can't imagine they'd make us remember the CD Walkman experience. ?

Plenty of other vehicles have traditional platter based HDDs. I know Dodge had some for local mp3 playback.

@godfodder0901 you’re coming up on your one year anniversary with your guide. Whatcha it’s awfully nice of them to get you a truck. Have anything planned for them? ?

hopefully we don’t all have a year long engagement before getting our vehicles!

I have no idea. Have never owned one and never tried to service one. You tell me. None of the applications you mentioned writes to disk as much and as often as Sentry mode in Tesla does for Video and Tesla uses an external drive. I wonder why?

You are asking the wrong question. The idea is not making a part that is unlikely to fail easy to replace and accessible but the ones that will. All SSD applications are not created equal.

They’re generally built into the infotainment unit. So not something the average owner is going to remove

tesla uses an external drive because until quite recently their infotainment systems used a compactflash or SD card in what Tesla calls the “MCU”. Not enough capacity.

Rivian’s service model is very similar to every other automaker in that they expect you will use their service facilities for every little thing.
At least they’re selling it as being more proactive due to telemetry, and they come to you for stuff that would otherwise have one stuck in a dealership lounge if you’d bought an F150.?

It had been non functional for some time, apparently.
Oh damn, I would have thought they would have had this basic functionality working since day one.

I think Rivian disabled it for a period of time because of software issues.

Thanks for posting these shots! Any chance you could post a picture of the New Birds' Eye view. I'd love to see what it really will look like.

Yeah - but that is from quite some time ago. My circa 2012 Wrangler had the Uconnect 730 that had effectively the spinning 40GB drive from the original iPod in it.

The failure rate was higher than what you would expect - there was a cottage industry for replacements. (here is a site, for instance)

Also, no one is making them anymore.

I agree that they sucked, and I have no doubt that they failed at an incredible rate.

In 2022 (even if designed in 2018) there is no excuse for using spinning hard drives. SSD has been the standard for a long time.
