It is very surprising that Rivian wasn't able to work with the compressor supplier to come up with a lower sound level option. Maybe with all the talk on internet they will redesign and future trucks will be quieter at some point.

Any comparison videos of the sound? Or just in general of the gen2 heap pump?

On the Gen2, I don’t think it’s the heat pump that is super loud. It’s the big condenser fan that pulls air through the radiator/condenser.
The heat pump does have its own unique sound but I think most of the “jet engine” sound is from the condenser fan.

Whatcha mean? Every Rivian use a heat-pump for air conditioning. What changed in the new generation is that the heat pump can now invert its direction and be used to heat the cabin, rather than having a heat pump for cooling and a resistive heater for heating. And they moved the AC compressor farther away from the cabin in the Gen2 vehicles to reduce noise.

Look up the definition of a heat pump and some other HVAC terms. A heat pump is basically a compressor that can cool (call it air condition if you want) in one direction or be flipped to heat if run in reverse.

In Gen2, the loud noise people are referring to is outside the vehicle. Everyone agrees that inside Gen2 the HVAC system is much quieter now but the outside is actually louder.

That's what I said. I just added that the Rivian's heat-pump cannot run in reverse(Gen1 can't)
I don't need to look up the definition of a heat pump.....

It's the placement of the compressor. The added components maybe added a little bit of noise but not much. What changed the most is the location of the equipment.

Jealous of everyone here griping about the ac being loud only outside. Mine is loud both outside and inside. Combine the loud droning compressor sound inside the cabin with the super loud whooshing air flowing over the poorly designed vents, you can legit not have a conversation with someone on a phone. You have to wait a solid 10-15 mins before making a call as you can only then achieve comfort and turn the AC settings down.

This doesn’t sound right. I would have this checked.

Do you have recirculation turned on?

Love the vehicle. Literally just picked it up. Have not had much exposure yet, but it sounds like a jet engine from the HVAC. Let me say this is from the outside. Inside cannot hear it. Is that everyone's experience?
I brought my 2024 R1S in for service this week and asked them to check the compressor as it is so loud in and out of the vehicle. They said its “normal” and Rivian is aware of the problem. Says the software settings have the RPMs too high and it will be fixed in future updates. Not sure if true/false….pretty sure he was tired of hearing me bitch about this issue on. $100k car regardless of how new the manufacturer is to the game :)

Yes recirculation is turned on. Rivian looked into it initially and the technician that witnessed it said it's not normal. However they haven't done anything to address it.

I suspect it will be addressed in an update.

I always switch to manual mode when entering town so not to compromise any prospective Rivian sidewalk sales.

Normal or not, I never had another vehicle where this was so loud to the point of embarrassment.

OK my last comment on the subject because it's just frickin' hilarious. My 85 year old hard of hearing father walked in from the garage after my wife got home and said "is that thing suppose to make all that noise"? ha ha ha ha

Once the cabin cools down does the sound also reduce?
