At least one of your issues can be solved with a settings change - you can set proximity lock to either only lock, but not unlock - or be completely off when you're at home. This solves exactly the situation you're describing where it is constantly locking/unlocking in the garage. It will continue to function as normal away from home
Yes, this is exactly what I did and what lead to me now having to pull my phone out of my pocket at home, wake the phone, so it will unlock my car.

You shouldn't have to wake your phone - I don't know where to find this setting on iPhone, but on Android you need to change the settings to "not optimize" energy use. Then the phone doesn't have to be awake.

My 2cents - the fob is kinda handy in the hotel/restaurant valet parking situation as it causes less confusion for the valet. Having the physical "thing" to hand over, that fits in the rack/cubby/lockbox, creates less cognitive dissonance for the guy (or gal) working the kiosk.

That said, for full disclosure - in the year+ of ownership, I've been faced with valet parking a handful of times and in each case I've chickened out and negotiated with the attendant to "park it myself" (on two occasions the attendants scored ride-alongs & loved the novelty! ?) - maybe one day I'll be brave enough to hand over the fob AND let the attendant do the parking, but I suspect it may be some way off still...
