According to the Rivian rep at my recent test drive, the 2027 R1S / R1T is due out next month. So I thought I would start a thread speculating on what changes we should expect. My starter random list of likely and unlikely upgrades
  • Lidar/RAP1
  • Infotainment upgrade
  • R2 phone charger
  • New wheels and colors
  • Halo scroll wheels
  • Two row option (R1S)

Probably the only thing new is OS 2.0, but they aren't at feature parity with the first OS yet, so I think even that is doubtful.

Expect zero changes. Be pleasantly surprised if there's anything at all.

Gotta admit the only thing I ultimately want to see is end of Gen2 deals that rival those on the final Gen1s 🤣

I think Jose at RivianTrackr said changes would be minor overall but captain's chairs might be an R1S option.

The R2 phone charger is now in R1, I took delivery of a 2026 tri a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly suprised.

Captain chairs would be such an easy and obvious update/option.

Not necessarily all that easy since it wasn't designed that way from the start. May require a new floor to implement the mounting points. new trim/carpet to finish the now exposed floor area. Obviously the seats. Plus all those new parts to inventory.

That doesn't seem all the difficult...but I have never built a car before :)

Me either, but I've been involved building a few race cars. 🤣

Just adding the new seat mounts mean the foundation of the R1S that's been used since the beginning probably has to change. I'm sure something could be fabricated to use the existing 2nd row mounting points, but then you'd get the people whining the resultant fit & finish doen't meet their expections for a $80k vehicle. 🤣

My guess. For 2027, Rivian cancels R1 Tri motor, introduce R1S/T X by RAD, and new color offering.

I'm in the "not much is going to change" camp...

We might see changes to the rear seating, as others have said. But I don't see Rivian investing much in product updates when they're focused on new products like the R2/R3....

They need to reduce powertrain options, so it's possible they drop the dual non-performance and potentially the tri motor options. To be profitable, they need to get the price point of these higher, since R2 will cover the lower cost tier.

The things I would love to see updated in an imaginary world:
1) Actual glove boxes (like the R2)
2) Better storage in the door cards, a spot for a decent sized water bottle (hydroflask)
3) Charge port moved to rear drivers side to match R2 (better Tesla SC connectivity)
4) Ability to choose a metal roof rather than glass, or a built in retractable screen

Now that's the first list I've seen that would actually provide meaningful daily benefits! 👍

*This. Plus, I'm sure they have to crash-test the new seats as well.
