Riding on 21” Pirelli Scorpion Verde ATs, just over 5k miles on them. Originals with my Gen1 R1S I got 2 months ago.

I was driving to work this morning when I heard a bang, pulled into a lot and saw the TPMS say my rear passenger tire was dropping got out to see the air racing away.

Tire was completely flat within a minute. Got towed home, sent the attached pic to Rivian and they said it is 100% NOT a warranty issue.

Can someone tell me (I’m not an expert), if this looks like a defect or just road damage? I didn’t go over anything I could see, it seemed to just happen.

Thanks all!

PS I tried to go search for similar posts and could only find obvious punctures.

I would reach out to a local pirelli dealer. Not a Rivian warranty issue but maybe pirelli will make it right

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I had a blowout in my d/s rear AT tire a few weeks back. Didn't see anything on the road, didn't feel anything - just saw the TPMS dropping fast.

Sometimes you hit stuff and have no evidence of it. While it could certainly be a defect, it's most likely unseen debris.

Check out u-tires if you want to pick up spares online. They are flooded with 21s from people unloading them - usually cheap.

I’ll take a look thanks, but I’m in Canada and have only ever seen 5 other Rivians on my travels - 1 of those being my uncle’s ?

I had a similar experience at 7k miles, except I was going 75MPH on the interstate. There was a bang, and the the incident recorder captured it. I had bought a spare so no problem continuing on my trip. When I got home I set up an appointment with the SC here in Atlanta. After waiting 4 hrs in the SC, they told me it was replaced for free. I asked if it was considered defective and I just got a shrug. But I was pleased, tired of being there and didn’t want to press the issue.

Thanks for your experience. I’ve got an open ticket to have some panels realigned, so I’m going to take the old rubber in and have them look at it while I’m there. I guess best case scenario I have a full size spare.

Perhaps it's unrelated but looking at the photos (nice photos, BTW), there is some yellowish discoloration starting just before the damage, more around the split area, then decreasing after the split. Also some damage to the trailing edge of the lug in front of the split. I would be interested to see if that discoloration is only in the area of the damage. I could imagine running over the end of a piece of rusty steel 'L' bracket or such. Maybe a very sharp rock? Just noodling.

It doesn't look all that different to what happened to one of my 21s in Montana a couple years back. That was a large rock of some kind just punctured it. Heavy truck and very thin tire.

Most likely something got lodged in there and it blew out when it came out (or in) causing a worse blowout. My opinion. Have someone take the tire off and take a look at it even better, probably going to be hard to claim a defect, even if it is the case.

Sorry this happened to you and best of luck.

Thanks for the idea. New tire arrived today, I’ll take the old one to a dealer to start the warranty process and we’ll see what happens.
