Based on the last sentence that you quoted from mgc0216, it sounds like he is both in a position to know and in a position such that he can not share the specifics of what he knows.

I think safe to assume plans were put on hold as a result of the omicron spike. As that currently appears to be in retreat, I am hopeful that things will gear up again real S00N.
In a conversation I had with CS, they stated that they are getting ready to start demo drives up again s00n.

Brave! I just avoid posting info that could lead into danger zones. Never know what outsiders are supposed to know.

I am an outsider. I have zero affiliation with Rivian other than holding a reservation.

If you buy a car out of state, you pay taxes in the state you register it.. not purchase it.
False. You can defer sales/use tax to the state you reside or register it (these can be two different states)

My understanding is that the car is registered in the other state first. So you’d pay the taxes in that state, as if you had gone there and bought it yourself.
False.

You're always paying sales tax in your home state, there's no way around that (well, unless your state doesn't have sales tax).
False again. Case by case, state by state basis.

if you buy a car in California while living in WA, you have to pay CA sales tax to drive it out of CA. You then have to pay WA sales tax, but WA allows you to credit what you already paid CA towards your balance.
Nope.

He mentioned there was some Power of Attorney to establish, and then Rivian could register the vehicle for us in WA and we would receive the title and plates in the mail.
So this is where I'm gonna be the weirdo and make their job fun. If they allow purchase to occur in states other than Illinois, I'm going to request Oregon or Montana, where my in-laws have residence and where I planned to buy a Rav4 prime before.
I live in Washington state and want delivery in Washington state.
I will be registering in my home of residence, Florida.

I can't wait to get a guide ?

My understanding is that the car is registered in the other state first. So you’d pay the taxes in that state, as if you had gone there and bought it yourself. And then it’s “imported” into Washington, so a new registration is created

I’m by no means an expert on this, just going off of what my Guide has said and tiny bit of Googling I’ve done
I don't think you have to jump through those loops, and it would be good to confirm with Rivian.

This is based on both past experience I have, and talking with my State representative after I pointed out how hypocritical the Democratic stance is on protecting dealers with regard to EVs in the State.

I purchased my XC60 through a dealer in Texas. The dealer registered the truck in WA and just shipped it to me. Very straight forward.

Reading the State law, and talking to Rivian, I don't think there is anything limiting Rivian from doing the same thing. They just can't have a physical presence in the State where sales are happening.

Edit: I took a couple of hours to hit submit, and apparently 350 people made the same points I did. Bravo everyone.

Tbh as long as I can give them money and they give me a truck in return, I don’t even remotely care about the legalese or intricacies of the process

Hahaha. I do for two reasons:
1. I would rather not pay say.... 10% sales tax or something twice.
2. In the office chance that this off-the-hood tax rebate sticks in the WA budget and is implemented in July, I'd like to not have an excuse for the State to exclude Rivian buyers from it with us not purchasing it "here".

Random question. Anyone know how Polestar is selling their vehicles in States that don't allow direct sales? They have a showroom in the Seattle area with cars. It looks a hell of a lot like a dealership. Are they just completing the transaction online in the showroom or something and then they walk you out to the car?

False. False again. Nope.
For most people, yes, they'll pay sales tax where they register the new car (a residence or business). There are (always) exceptions and plenty of people willing to exploit loopholes to avoid paying their share of taxes where they live. However, be wary of an audit or a nosy traffic cop if you use them as exceptions are exceptions until the person checking them is having a bad day.

Glad we clarified the direct selling stuff. The whole thing is so unnecessary.

Maybe because they’re a division of Volvo or something like that? Not really sure

At least here in Michigan Polestar is sold by the Volvo dealer.

Can someone explain why I should put sales tax to the state on a product the state has made illegal for me to purchase within its borders?

I live near Rivian‘s Irvine office and have been waiting for a local test drive invitation. I can’t wait to experience the 800 plus HP and the McLaren designed adjustable air suspension.

I believe that is exactly what they are doing, and what Rivian and Lucid will do as well.

It'd be really cool if your friend/acquaintance would let the handful of folks here in Bend take a look their truck!

(Well, apparently the number has climbed since I last looked and there are now more than a handful in Bend. I counted 12 but could be more since some members may have just stated "Oregon" as their location.)
No kidding, would love to be able to check one out in-person if someone is willing to meet up in Bend.
