Is the 7500 mile service worth doing? What do they do? What's the multipoint inspection about? And the tire rotation? Does it cost extra?

I had a number of liftgate issues and other minor items that I had a mobile service appointment for that left a lot to be desired - and left me with some new scratches and problems... Since then, I had a service center appointment that I kept kicking down the road, but I finally went in to look at my minor issues and do the 7500 mile service.

After I got there, they said that I could leave my R1 and it wouldn't be looked at for about a week, or I could take it back and handle it all with a mobile appointment. They did apologize and said that I should have been offered mobile service when I made the appointment.

Now that I'm waiting for the mobile appointment, I'm wondering if it's worth doing. If they're going to charge me for a tire rotation, I might as well just take it to a shop nearby. And if the multipoint inspection is just a diagnostic and visual check of anything wrong, I feel like I can assess a lot of that on my own.

In a surprisingly happy way, my minor issues have either resolved on their own or I've been so satisfied with the performance and capability of the vehicle I just don't care anymore. Plus, I feel like putting it in for service or having a mobile session might create more issues as many stories have shown, and like my own mobile service proved.

I guess my question is was the 7500 mile service worth it for you, what did it cost, and did you have yours done with mobile service?

Good question! I’m approaching 22,500 miles and I don’t recall being prompted about service at 7500 or 15k.

I asked about setting up the inspection. They told me it was $240-ish (don’t remember the exact number) and tire rotation was $60. it’s supposed to go into the shop next week but after thinking about it i’m wondering what i am actually getting for $240. i do want/need the tires rotated but as for a multi point inspection: well, the car is under warranty. if something is broken, it’s kind of on them to fix. there is zero detail as to what is inspected or why would you inspect it.

i’m curious if anyone has done it or if they got any written report or invoice of items checked.

at 7,500 you get the multi-point inspection. At 22,500 is the comprehensive inspection. Maintenance schedule is at the link provided above and shows what they do for each. Not sure what Rivian charges for the inspection. Would need to inquire with service on charges as those could also change over time.

I would do (and have only done) the tire rotations. I hope the truck prompts me for the fluid flushes and changes in 2 years or 100k more miles. I might be more concerned about a multipoint inspection if I bought used and didn't know the history. But also, with as backed up as the service centers are, how thorough would a multipoint inspection be, especially if the customer doesn't really think anything is wrong.

Thanks for the information and responses.

I don't think I'm going to have them do the mobile service this time. Very little to gain out of it and high potential for another ham handed experience where the guy causes new issues.

Why I'm not going to do it:
A. I can just get a tire rotation done anywhere, more conveniently. And since it's not free with Rivian, no need to go with them.
B. Since it's mobile, it won't be up on a lift, so no benefit/opportunity for them to spot things while it's up in the air.
C. Breakdown of the multi-point inspection items:
  • Tire pressures and tread depth including spare (if equipped) - WILL BE COVERED DURING ROTATION
  • Brake pad and rotor thickness - WON'T BE AN ISSUE FOR YEARS
  • Suspension wear and fastener torques including lug nuts - SHOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE YET/CAN EXAMINE MYSELF
  • Vehicle windows for chips and cracks - CAN EXAMINE MYSELF
  • Vehicle functions check - CAN RUN DIAGNOSTICS MYSELF (THANK YOU, FORUM)
  • Windshield washer, brake fluid, and coolant level check - CAN EXAMINE AND REMEDY MYSELF
  • Windshield washer jets and wiper blades - CAN EXAMINE AND REMEDY MYSELF
I'm definitely going to do the multi-point at either 15K or 22K miles, but no need so early on at 7500. And MAYBE they'll be better with service, appointments, etc. at that time compared to their subpar execution at this time?

Paid Tesla $500 back in 2018-19 for some service that wasn’t needed, have since 180k and no service…EVs need tires changed and that’s about it as far as I can tell…at least if it’s mobile don’t have to waste a bunch of time…

I think you need to make an appointment now.

The rate Rivian service center scheduling goes, it'll take long enough that you probably will have at least 15k, if not 22k miles :)

So (from tangential experience--family members who have skipped oil change intervals, for example), if you miss an inspection and don't have documentation demonstrating that 'all is well at interval X' as required from the manufacturer. That DOES give the manufacturer probable cause to deny future warranty claims that might be related to a missed inspection.

In this instance, I do not know what Rivian's stance is on 'skipping' maintenance intervals. However, would you be in the right if say... something they would've caught at a maintenance interval and cost them $50 to fix today, exacerbates due to ongoing deterioration due to its affects and costs Rivian $5000 later on? That might be something worth thinking about.

Just my .02.

I am between intervals myself: this Maintenance Schedule was released after 15k miles for me. My 'next' interval should be the 22,500 (as per the mobile app). I've done my own tire rotations, however I've also been into the shop 3 different times for warranty work, so Rivian HAS inspected and had hands on the vehicle.

I have the 7500 mile scheduled for this Wednesday. They just sent me the work estimate and the total is $60, so I’m not sure where the $240 amount came from? Basically they bill the tire rotation and inspection separately, then credited me $100 for the inspection labor.

I believe for this to be the case it would either need to be a no charge service or they have to publish all the requirements so that a third party provider can perform the work.

It isn't legal for Rivian to require a service that only Rivian can perform at whatever price Rivian wants to charge...to maintain warranty status.

If you look at my estimate above, that is the case. They aren’t charging me for the inspection, only the tire rotation.

I did see that, but others have reported being charged for it I believe. Maybe someone challenged that legally or they just figured it out and now all the inspections are free of charge?
