About a month and a half ago I scheduled service. My appointment number was approximately 700,000. I scheduled another one today (new metallic whirring sound from wheels) and was assigned number 815,000 (roughly). That’s a lot of appointments for not that many cars.

Not how the numbers work. My truck is at the service center right now. Appointment number 56840...

When did you first book the appointment? My service center is still booking three or four months out. Are you sure it's not missing a digit, or was rescheduled?

Here's my complete service history, with approximate dates and appointment numbers, across three Rivians:

12/22#146,000
04/23#142,000
05/23#233,000
09/23#263,000
11/23#397,000
12/23#445,000
02/24#529,000
05/24#562,000
06/24#701,000
10/24#815,000

As you can see, only one is out of order (the first) and that was to replace a tire which picked up a nail. It was actually made after my second appointment (which was five months out from when I booked it). Because it was simply a tire purchase, they slotted me in rather quickly.

So, I think the numbers are simply assigned at the time the appointment is first requested, and not in the order that the service happens. I believe the appointment number is just a counter which increases without any gaps (except for the occasional cancellation, I guess).

Trying to create a false narrative? That's not how most customer-facing numbers work. That doesn't even pass the "smell test" - it would imply an average of 10 service visits per vehicle. Clearly wrong.

Take Rivian reservations numbers for example - not sequential starting from 1, so us early-adapters had little to no idea where we were in line. But more importantly there was no way for competitors to tell exactly how many reservations there were (outside of official press releases). Everyone does this.

I had a service appointment in February 2024 to rotate my tires. Appointment #40167. Are you implying there have been almost 800,000 service visits in the past 6 months? BTW, my previous rotation was in August 2023, six months earlier, with an appointment #94667. So the numbers went DOWN?

What the f*ck are you on? False narrative? It is exactly because these numbers are so high that this discussion is worth having. All I have is my data. What is it about EV companies with collapsing stock prices which makes everyone a paranoid schizophrenic? What a disgusting troll comment you just made. I can smell your bile all the way across the Internet.

Yes, you'd think so. But Tesla had sequential VINs for a while before they started to fuzz them. Similarly, they had sequential reservation numbers embedded in their HTML, as did Rivian. Everyone makes the same mistake, then fixes it eventually. They did not start out non-sequential.

This is good data, thanks for sharing. Your first data point (02/24, 40167) would be consistent with mine if you were missing a trailing digit. The second would need a similar error, but two in a row is unlikely to be a typo. So, I would say you either booked these tire rotations far in advance (in 2022, when you first got your truck) or rotations don't count as real service appointments and have separate accounting. Or, as you mention, the numbers are assigned out of order. However, I have ten data points which show in-order assignment across three Rivians. It's a mystery.

How about someone books a new request, schedules an appointment for it, and then publishes that number here? That would be great data.

No ryme nor reason. My last appointment was booked months ago, but still doesn't account for the random numbers I've been assigned before that.

Thank you. That settles it, then. They're random, and my monotonically increasing numbers are just a very unlikely coincidence. I'll update the thread title.

Based on your numbers alone, your assumption wasn't too much of a stretch. I thought initially that they may have a different pool or sequence of numbers for each service center, but there is just too much inconsistency.

When you said “dang” just now, everyone knows you meant “d*mn”, but it’s a fig leaf to cover your junk. F*ck is similar. I could use “feck” “fudge” or “frack” but then I risk offending the Irish, the bakers, or the brave, determined crew of Battlestar Galactica, respectively. :)

Mine are actually across service centers. Two more just recently opened. I’m sure someone will come along with a request they filed today or tomorrow and that will be another data point. Mine come from the Rivian mobile app, just in case there are multiple kinds of numbers floating around.

Mine are all from Bellevue, except the last one which is from Seattle. Numbers from the app as well.
