Taking delivery of a 2025 R1T next week, pretty excited about it. Having the Tesla Universal Charger installed tomorrow. What adapter do I need to use this wall charger with my Rivian? I know we need an adapter to use the super charger. Thanks for educating me.

Congratulations on your Rivian order. Please share pictures when you take delivery.

Enjoy your delivery day.

Please confirm if you ordered the Universal Tesla wall charger which comes with the Tesla to J-1772 adapter. You will need an adapter if you ordered the regular version.

You will need the AC Level 2 A2Z Stellar adapter to use a regular Tesla Home Charger / Destination charger commonly found in hotels, Airbnb, shopping centers and parking lots with your Rivian.

You will need the DC Level 3 Typhoon Pro adapter to charge your Rivian at eligible Tesla Superchargers.

You can bundle the A2Z Stellar AC Level 2 Tesla to J-1772 adapter for $71 additional after discount by using the drop down on the Level 3 Typhoon Pro adapter page to get both adapters.

Feel free to use the below links or forum discount code "RIV" to save on products sold on A2Z website and get free shipping.

TYPHOON PRO | NACS DC CHARGERS to CCS1 Adapter | 500A | 1000V | DC | 12 Months Warranty

Tesla To J1772 adapter (Tesla Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

Yes the universal wall connector doesn’t need the adapter. The Stellar adapter is still really useful for traveling though. One scenario where you would use it is a hotel with Tesla destination chargers most of the ones out there currently are either second or third GEN Tesla wall connectors, and so the adapter would be needed to use them of course. It would also work on other Tesla level 2 chargers.

Having the adapters gives you the widest range of charging capability.

Thanks for replies. Glad I do not have to buy another adapter for the universal charger. Seems some people just want to sell you stuff you don’t need.

Be aware that there have been issues with using the adapter that is included in the Tesla Universal Wall Connector. Charging a Rivian or other brand of vehicle doesn’t always work.

The fix is to contact Tesla support (using the Tesla app that is required to install/configure the wall connector) to report the issue. They will install a different firmware version on your wall connector to address the issue. The firmware that originally fixed this issue included HEAD in the version number.

It’s been a while since this issue was first reported, so by now, Tesla may have updated the default firmware version and this is no longer required.

I think this issue is completely addressed by Tesla through general firmware updates at this point. My Universal Wall Connector was installed and configured in my absence in early 2023 with no tech support or special update. It has worked perfectly with my R1S and a RAV4 Prime since. When you first plug it in it goes red for a few seconds, then switches to green and charges. That’s because it first tries to connect using Tesla protocol which has to fail before it switches over to J1772.

All interesting. I have an adapter for my wall charger at home because I moved from a Tesla to a Rivian. I bought a Lectron Vortex Plug to use Superchargers. Does not work. No phone for help anywhere. Lost a day trip because it did not work. Based on my experience, don’t buy Lectron.

I used a Tesla Universal Charger at the hotel in South Lake Tahoe (09/19) and it worked great. I had to use the Tesla app to start and pay for the charging and scanning a QR code on the Universal Charger.

Tesla Universal Wall Charger *INCLUDES* the adapter, nothing else to buy.

As long as the firmware is up to date on the charger, it works just great. It is a gen-3 Tesla charger and when they first started shipping the charger with the option of the NACS or J1772, as well as offering the Universal one with the adapter, there were a few firmware glitches that caused some incompatibility issues. As long as it’s a new charger, you shouldn’t have any issues. I mean, the firmware to address this released like 2 years ago…. And you set the charger up with your phone and it should download and install the latest firmware as part of the process.

Ugh, could be a few things here. First did you confirm the Tesla location(s) you went to were open to CCS charging? It will tell you in the Tesla app, but ironically won’t usually tell you when you initiate a charging session.

What Lectron adapter did you buy and where did you buy it from? There are a number of shady online vendors selling the WRONG Lectron adapter as the CCS to NACS adapter. And to further complicate things, many of the initial production of Lectron CCS to NACS adapters were faulty and were all recalled, but apparently there are a number of them still out there in circulation or the recall was not properly dealt with. Lectron has made some decent adapters in the past, but they have essentially zero customer support and quality control is highly suspect.
