Discount Tires quoted me $680 for a 22 inch spare. The tire has a 65K warranty. Rivian wants $1500. I have a jack puck and jack. All I would use it for is a spare. This seems like a no brainer. Any reasons why I wouldn't go the cheaper route?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Rivian charges $1500 for a spare tire, or the wheel+tire spare kit package? Huge difference.

the Rivian quote is for the tire, wheel and spare kit as a package. but still cheaper to go 3rd party. if you already have the jack and jack puck, no reason to get the Rivian package. id either go 3rd party or look for someone selling just the Rivian wheel and tire. just make sure the wheel and tire are rated for the Rivian

Just curious. Assuming R1T as you are looking at full size spare.

Other users have had success extending the life of the treads by doing 5 wheel/tire rotation. (Search 5 wheel rotation.) You should be able to find a deal on someone selling 22” as spares, especially if you are willing to pick up.

Probably most compelling benefit is having matched spare with similar wear in event of blowout or catastrophic damage to a wheel. Probably more important for those with hard to fix 21” but there aren’t a ton of options for 22” either. I have the R1S with 22” so will prob get compact spare once they are available since the full size doesn’t fit the well.

Definitely looking into this. I think a 3rd part route would be the best a cheapest. I have seen 4 pucks for about $30/ea. and then if the wheel/tire is about $700,.....that would make it about ~$820ish.

What is the model number of the tire and wheel? I don't need a match wheel/rim....just something that will work.

This ridiculous from the GEAR SHOP:

General Grabber Tire (HTS60) $233.
Wheel $313. Model number?
BTW. Not sure why but discount tires rotated and balanced my tires for free.

Just a forewarning, that number is an estimate...apparently. I paid almost $1200 for my 21" road spare (and the mobile tech scratched the hell out of the backside of my wheel...). They won't just ship it to you; they made me have mobile service to 'receive' it even though they shipped it to my mobile tech...

I generally prefer OEM for all the reasons, but if I had to do this again, I would probably find a less expensive alternative. Notwithstanding the experience I had.

When I called, I was scheduled and no one gave me a quote, so I assumed we'd be closer to the $1095 on the site. It wasn't until day of, when the tech was enroute that I received this quote to approve....

Thanks for the info. I take it that the "Service Kit" are the pucks?. I am hoping someone will post the model numbers for a wheel and tire. I don't need a spare that will give me 30,000 miles.....only about 50 - 100 miles at a time.

I believe the service kit is the scissor jack + the puck + the breaker bar and extension in a bag + the cover that holds all of those things. All of the aforementioned parts are attached to the circular cover, and the cover is then attached via the $20 custom wingnut and $20 custom stud. The one thing I'll give it credit for is they engineered the stud hex tool into the wingnut, so you don't need a separate tool to completely remove the stud before pulling the wheel out (which unless you are very careful and pull it straight up, you'll damage the wheel paint for sure..so...take the stud out first).

That was the hardest part for me. I'm sure I could've made the cover and kit with some clever foam cutting, maybe some delrin or kydex and allthread.. But it's just easier to buy something that's already custom-fit for the application. Everything is bolted down neatly and contained in a way that nothing's going to come loose or scratch.

Check Facebook Marketplace. I routinely see full spares for 600-700. Got my 21" full spare with Rivian Jack Kit for $700.
