Air-Conditioning not cold enough - Will I be charged if it's "within spec"?

I guess “complaining” here might be useful after all. I got a call from Rivian today about my AC service ticket (among other things). After seeing all the complaints here of this happening since the recent update, I mentioned that to the service representative; he said he’d heard a couple similar reports so hearing this from me was useful.

Mine coincided with the previous update but I can’t be sure it was caused by it. The major wave of new reports coincide with the latest update.

I put ceramic tint all around and on the windshield. I then added covers/shade for the roof. Easy to install in the summer. I also use a sunshield for the windshield if I park outside. All this helps keep the car cool. It's 100 degrees here, like most of the country and the ac is working fine.

I’ll just add my voice here - in just the last few days any time temps are > 85F or so my Gen2 R1S Tri-motor is just plain incapable of cooling down. It’s downright nasty - 30 minute drive home and it barely cools down.

I scheduled a service appointment (1st avail in ~2 weeks) but in the interim it’s awful.

I remember the days of "360 degree air conditioning", where we opened 3 windows (driver, passenger, and sunroof), and drove at 60 MPH. What privileged society we have become.

Not saying there isn't an issue w/ the A/C keeping up, just that the things we complain about on this forum are often such 1st world problems.

Driving around LA with all the tire, dust and exhaust emissions with your windows Open is probably about the worst thing possible for your health. Godspeed.

Yes, I'm aware driving with your windows down reduces range/fuel efficiency. And while I'm sure the air quality in LA (or any metropolitan area, for that matter) is crap, I highly doubt it will affect your health any worse than people riding motorcycles, bikes, or even exercising. In fact, it's probably worse for the latter two as you'd be exerting yourself more, and thereby breathing in more of the crap air.

I bet you two are great at parties...

Telling people that complaining AC doesn’t work in their car is a first world problem isnt exactly party material either. And btw, not all of us have the privilege of living in Southern California with no humidity mild weather. Some of us are in the south with 100% humidity and 90+ temps and long commutes.

Well, to be clear, I never said the A/C not working was a first world problem. I said the things we often complain about on this forum were first world problems, and the OP was complaining that the A/C wasn't "cold enough", not that it doesn't work.

And the "joke" was "360 Degree Air Conditioning", to which the other two posters felt obligated to respond to (clearly I need to work on my material).

Oh, and "BTW"...I live in Virginia, near DC, so don't tell me about "100% humidity, 90+ temps and long commutes". I've been doing it for over 30 years, and did it w/o A/C in my vehicle for the first 2 that I lived here. I know how bad it can be, but I also recognize that complaining about it is most definitely a "first world problem".

My 2004 Tahoe a/c is much more powerful than my 2024 Rivian. The Rivian a/c is acceptable for me, but the Tahoe is much better

Lots of posts but few actually attempt to answer the question. If you take a car in and everything is 'to spec', nothing is technically broken and, therefore, there is nothing to fix. Will they charge you for all the time and effort to confirm everything is fine? That's a big "it depends". They may write off the tech's time as a goodwill gesture or if they decide it's on your dime. Regardless, unless it's predetermined to be gratis, they should provide an estimate of the cost to check it out, which you will be required to sign. You should be able to pin this down when you drop it off and commit to the work.

(Some may remember, many moons ago, you sometimes needed to lower the temperature to induce the compressor to kick on. This was fixed; however, after a recent update, I experienced the same issue as others have mentioned, i.e., blowing hot air. I tried adjusting the temperature but it didn't help. So, I turned everything off, waited a couple minutes and turned it all back on again and everything was fine. It's happened to me a couple of times.)

My 2004 Tahoe a/c is much more powerful than my 2024 Rivian. The Rivian a/c is acceptable for me, but the Tahoe is much better

Part of the reason for that is your 2004 Tahoe is R134a refrigerant. EPA regulations sunsetted R134a due to its GWP (Global Warming Potentional). All auto manufacturers now use R1234yf. Depending on who did the study, R1234yf is 5% to 20% lower performance compared to R134a.
