I used to be able to go: Alexa - Call XYZ (where XYZ was the name of a contact in my phonebook) and it handled it pretty well. For the last couple of months it can't seem to do this anymore. I.e. It doesn't recognize the name from my phonebook. Feels like some integration issue has arisen between Alexa, the contacts on the paired phone, and something Rivian software is doing. Anyone else have this issue?

I generally try to avoid saying anything that sounds like "Alexa" when I'm in the car. I'm really hoping Rivian AI gives us a better experience.

I've owned my R1T since November and Alexa has never been able to make calls for me. I connected it to my Amazon account when I first bought it and told it to download my contacts but it didn't help. Alexa in general has been useless. When I ask it to navigate to a local store, it might give me directions to one with a similar name 50 miles away (even when I tell it the city to search in). It doesn't recognize street names either. If I ask it a question that could be easily answered by an internet search it responds with some version of "I cannot help with that".

Maybe it is Connect+. I think basic commands still work but anything other than that requires Connect+.

I have connect plus and it regularly happens. Says I have to allow phone # in my Alexa App. (it is) It regularly works then doesn't. I think it happens more when I just get in car and drive right away, like it didn't fully link up before it is put it into drive.

The reason Alexa is currently unavailable or malfunctioning in many Rivian vehicles is that Rivian is officially phasing out Amazon Alexa in favor of its own AI-powered assistant.

While Rivian and Amazon have a close partnership, the integration of Alexa has been a long-standing point of frustration for owners due to bugs and limited vehicle control. Here is the breakdown of why you’re seeing it disappear or fail:

1. The Transition to "Rivian Assistant"

Rivian has announced a move to its own native Rivian Assistant, which is built on Google's Gemini large language models (LLMs). This new system is designed to handle more complex tasks that Alexa struggled with, such as:
  • Deep Vehicle Control: Adjusting complex settings that require local hardware access.
  • Voice-to-Text: Native SMS messaging (a feature long-missing from the Alexa integration).
  • Contextual Reasoning: Better understanding of natural language for navigation and media.

2. Software "Amnesia" and Updates

Many users have reported that after recent software updates (specifically version 2025.46 and later), Alexa has developed "amnesia." It may work for exactly one command after a reset before failing again. This is largely because Rivian has stopped prioritizing bug fixes for the Alexa interface as they prepare to swap the underlying code for the Gemini-powered system, which is slated for a wider rollout in early 2026.

3. The "Connect+" Paywall

If your Alexa was working and suddenly stopped, it might be tied to Rivian's Connect+ subscription service.
  • Alexa Basic: Still allows for simple vehicle commands (temp, hood, etc.) for free.
  • Alexa Connected: Requires a paid Connect+ subscription to access "cloud" features like Spotify streaming, weather, and advanced navigation searches.
If you are looking for a way to use voice commands in the meantime, some owners have had success by re-linking their Amazon account in the vehicle settings, but be aware that the feature is officially "on the way out."

This is interesting. I hadn't heard about this. At present this is a real detractor as I effectively don't have the ability to 'voice dial' to my contacts due to the issues I mentioned in the original thread. I do have Connect+ so I don't think that's the issue. Any other suggestions from anyone for resolving this?

Try logging out and signing back in. Token Refresh, Alexa on Rivian relies on a specific "handshake" token from Amazon. Recent software updates (like 2026.03 or 2026.07) have been known to "break" or expire these tokens prematurely. By logging out and back in, you forced a fresh handshake with Amazon’s servers, clearing the "amnesia" that causes it to stop responding.

Cache Clearing, Signing out often clears the local voice-cache in the vehicle’s infotainment system. This fixes the specific bug where the vehicle hears you but the Alexa app fails to process the request. Signing out often clears the local voice-cache in the vehicle’s infotainment system. I tried redoing the whole Alexa setup, it worked once and then went right back to the old behavior. :(
