They use a small sensor that is basically a microphone and it detects the loud siren of the heat/fire/smoke/CO alarm and then triggers the central alarm system.

I have one in my house. It works well... Perhaps too well... The "low battery chirp" on one of my detectors triggered my whole house alarm and the FD showed up.

I really want to use the alarm listener to integrate my heat alarm with my Ring system. The problem is that I also have a MyQ garage door opener in my garage and when you close the garage door via the app, the hub starts loudly beeping to warn people that the door is about to close. I'm pretty sure that would trigger the ring listener.

Maybe not. MyQ makes a very different sound than most alarms (and is nowhere near the same volume).

if you want to try it, buy the sensor and during installation there is a test mode where you can see if it’ll be triggered by your garage door opener. When in test mode, the ring app tells you when it detects an alarm, but won’t actually trigger the siren or call emergency response.
