I don't care for a lot of what is going on in the information technology arena. On the other hand, I have willingly bought into the current technoworld to access all of the cool stuff that comes with it.

My smartphone is a pocket computer and my Rivian EV is a computer on wheels. I would not care to give either of these up. Yes, my personal information is out there: so what. I really feel sorry for anyone who is interested in what I am doing for they must have a very sad life.

The government isn't the only threat vector to be worried about; organized crime love this defeatist mentality, especially. Apparently, you've never had your credit/debit card information stolen?

Imagine how much more damage a bad actor will do when they hack Rivian and get your location data to establish *patterns of life* movement tied to your home, work, family, friends, etc. addresses.

I don't have a "defeatist attitude", I just want to live my life without being some "extremist privacy nutbag".

As always, *Ignorance is bliss*, but some of us *choose the red pill*. ;-)

I get where you are coming from and this is one the reasons we didn't get a Tesla years ago. When my wife asked questions they told her the Model X recorded all conversations in the car and sent everything back to Tesla (not sure if true). This caused her to freak out and wonder what kind of privacy we really have and that was a hard no on the car.

Overall I think we need the government in the US to make laws similar to the EU but until that happens if you want to maintain privacy you have to give up a of things that are convenient in the process and eventually you might have no choice.

FWIW, anyone who uses ANY voice to speech command apps (e.g. Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, etc.) have an open microphone from your device to a backend service at Amazon, Apple, Google, etc.

This thread is a real roller coaster. Almost forgot I was on a Rivian forum.
Well then let me bring you back to topic then. WHEN (not IF) Rivian or one of its affiliates gets hacked with your private data, they are not liable since they required YOU to sign over your consent via their purchase agreement.

I am very aware of privacy issues with almost every piece of tech. No need to explain anything to me. The US in general is heavily under surveillance in almost every sector. No getting away from it 100%, which is unfortunate.

I've also driven a Tesla since early 2018. Been used to it for awhile. Also, almost all new cars have some sort of tracking feature and or data driven computer anyways. I get your concerns.

So you live thinking someone or some group is out there establishing “patterns of life” on you? Do you alter when you turn lights on and off at home, or which direction you drive to work and what times you leave? I mean, someone could be sitting across the street from your house right now gathering Intel on your daily routine!

And yet you are posting to a public forum (with presumably your real first name) on the interwebs. Hopefully you’re using a double encrypted VPN to avoid someone tracking your IP address.

Ugh

It’s 2023 FFS ... and I doubt anyone on the forums is high profile enough for some bad actors to spend the time and energy creating “patterns of life” with nefarious intent.

Obviously, VPN client running on all devices all the time among other countermeasures, and Steve may or may not be my first name, but considering that I work w/ at least 5 Steves, might as well be John. ;-)

Let's just say that I've spent 30+ years of my professional software engineering career on *the other side* of the equation, so I know what is possible by both good and bad actors, but the older I get the more *libertarian* I've become based upon my *FIRST HAND* knowledge and experience; i.e. no tinfoil hat necessary. #YMMV

I have all the voice features disabled on my phone and did not setup Alexa in the car. My parents have Alexa devices all through the house which drives me crazy as even when you deactivate them they seem to reactivate all the time.

I understand where you are coming from and have had discussions with people who feel the same way. While I'm not shut off from the world I try to safeguard a bit. The real issue is if someone figures out how to use this data for a nefarious purpose (Cambridge Analytica) or the government takes the data to start targeting groups people (Nazi Germany). I have an R1S and I know it is sharing a lot of data and I'm okay with that but I do feel people should have more choice in the matter and required safeguards should be put in place.

I've also had my info stolen and someone claimed unemployment and it was a yearlong process to get it fixed. The process on the backend is really bad which just makes it worse in every way.

Contrary to the *nothing you can do about it* myth, there are actually privacy phone and computer options unless you're a committed Apple fanboi then you are beyond help.
Did I not say: "There are precautions you can take and choose to opt out of certain things" ? Even with a privacy phone, we still generate and give tons of data... elsewhere.

Yet you finished by saying, "But, by and large, it's beyond your control" which is not correct unless refuse to give up Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, et. al.
