I sure hope Rivian doesn't cave to the "me too" position any more than they already have.

Personal opinion here, but I think the Rivian infotainment is far superior to AA or CarPlay already.
Why do you think supporting CarPlay will make Rivian’s existing system worse? Will once some people can choose to use Apple Maps will Rivian’s navigation system stop working? Or once one can choose to listen to Podcasts using Overcast in CarPlay will Rivian’s native podcast app get worse? (trick question, they don’t have one)

If you think Rivian’s existing system is better then CarPlay you can keep using it if they happen to change their mind about not supporting CarPlay.

Other people that really want CarPlay will get to use it, but you really don’t have to.

There must be a great reason to deny AA/CP. It's a deal breaker for so many potential buyers.
Well it isn’t no effort. It’ll probably take someone talented that knows Rivian’s systems a week or two to implement it, and a few weeks of QA time to verify it has no significant bugs. I don’t know what else they might have done in that time, but probably at least one less “big item” in a software update to get this one.

Then they are giving Apple a foothold into their EV, access to their customers. Also each customer that uses CarPlay as the infotainment in an EV eliminates an entire set of features that the EV maker could use to set themselves apart form other EV makers. Which makes them a bit cranky.

I’m sure a non trivial number of car executives also see the kind of money Apple makes on the app store and wants to build something like that.

There are things CarPlay doesn’t do well, and I can see car makers being very frustrated that they can’t fix any of that, like some number of their customers will use CarPlay for whatever that is, and if it sucks, their car will suck in that way for those customers despite all their best efforts to fix that. Like EV trip routing. Apple maps use to not do it at all, and now it kind of sort of does, but it isn’t great at it. Specifically it isn’t going to be nearly as good as Rivian’s ABRP derived routing software. For whatever set of people just pip over to CarPlay and look at their calendar and that gives them the address of the next appointment in Apple Maps and then plans it that way, well they don’t get Rivian’s “lets avoid crappy chargers if we can” work.

That can result in a poor experience, and at least some people at Rivian will care about that (maybe only in the abstract “if they get stranded they are less likely to buy another Rivian” kind of way, or maybe in a “it sucks that it sucks for them!” more direct way)

This is legitimate comedy writing.
Then explain the market share Tesla has been losing. I don't really care if you believe me or not, but to see Elon's latest business decisions and think he's been making good calls is the definition of willful ignorance. Your Tesla ship has sprung a leak.

They are not desperate enough to set aside their convictions about UI/UX and maintaining control over the brand’s destiny. Yet.

I have informed Rivian through the appropriate channels of my desire for consumer choice. But thanks for wasting YOUR time on this forum giving us your “pro” tip! Obviously you care, or you wouldn’t be telling us what to do.
Don't carplay my rivian, bro.

Personally I'd be happy if Rivian implemented Carplay now, and never touched the codebase that makes it work again.

There was a ton more assumptious comedy beyond that particular point and I reserve my right to laugh at funny things :D

I need my car to do 2 things: play music and navigate. The navigate part has been pretty good after Google maps update. I still open waze on the phone sometimes, but it's alright.

Music, not so. I still rely on Bluetooth. Rivian only supports 2 of the top 5 music streaming services. Youtube, Pandora and Amazon music are all missing. Promise of future availability isn't sufficient, when a significant number of sales are leases.

I knew this while buying, but mine has 4 motors and I wanted that. Now that tri and quad motor versions are an expensive niche, Rivian has to match the features from other manufacturers to get sales.

This is a lever that Tesla believes it can pull to increase sales volume. I wouldn't be surprised to see others like Rivian and GM follow suit.

This provides consumers choice and that choice is good regardless of what you end up going with.

Personally I don't care if they add it or not. I didn't use it much on previous vehicles that included it and I wouldn't use it in my Rivian. I just don't want to hear any more from the pro-distracted driver club claiming that it's a "safety issue"

No texting >>>>> Texting within line of sight (ie phone mount at dash level or CP/AA) > Texting while blind to road (phone in lap)

Don't fool yourself about the importance of line of sight. I'm very familiar with the studies regarding safety of any distracted driving, including those of CP/AA. But anyone that claims having peripheral vision of the road is just as unsafe as being blind to the road is just ignorant.

Perhaps the update that has hands-off eyes-off driving will also have carplay

If you are familiar with those studies then you already know that being slightly less bad than totally unsafe is still not "safe":)

I tried to make it clear to you with multiple GREATER THAN signs, but alas, I cannot make it simple enough.
