Jumpin in here... I don't own a Rivian, yet, but can you use your phone's hot spot and use it with a CarPlay adapter like this working through the infotainment system?
CarPlay
Nope, that product says "Your vehicle must support original wired CarPlay and be a touch screen”. It talks wireless CarPlay to your phone and turns it into wired CarPlay it shoves into the car.

All CarPlay from the car’s point of view is a thing that talks to the car and says “please draw this” while the car says “someone touched the screen here!” back and the phone generates a series of pictures that looks like a user interface, and the car keeps telling the phone where your finger is. There is almightily more to it then that (like sound, and some optional things where the car can supply apps that run on the phone which are in theory used to control things like the car’s HVAC and such).

It also offers some other features, but they all rely on pretending to be a wired CarPlay phone and talking to the car.

Sorry, good try, but it relies on the very thing Riven doesn’t want to give us, a way to take over that screen and the inputs.

Rivian will certainly feel the pressure if Tesla offers Carplay. I personally prefer a well thought out infotainment over relying on Carplay, but with literally everyone else offering it, Rivian might have to cave.
I sure hope Rivian doesn't cave to the "me too" position any more than they already have.

Personal opinion here, but I think the Rivian infotainment is far superior to AA or CarPlay already.

Rivian and RJ are stubborn, but with the R2 coming out and it being a more mass market vehicle, they might have to consider getting onboard just to stay competitive, specially if they can't point to Tesla anymore to be like "See! If you make good infotainment, no need for Carplay!" And they truly seem to take notes from what Tesla is doing, for the better (software defined vehicles) and for the worse (electronic door handles).

I'm with you though, Carplay is a heated topic in the forum, but IMO, which I know varies from many others, I don't think it adds anything that the infotainment from Rivian doesn't already have - in my use case. I know people want talk to text and all that stuff, but I never use it so its non-factor for me. I have a BMW and my wife drives a Mach-E and they both have Carplay, and I do prefer it much more than those native systems, but never go back to my Rivian and am floored that Carplay doesn't exist. If anything, I'm glad my wife can type an address and pick out music without being blocked out or forced to use Siri because I'm driving 🙄 like come on Apple, passengers do exist.

A reliable talk to text UI will go a long way with a vast majority of Rivian owners and significantly diminish the ACP demands. Outside of the text issue, and maybe the ability to identify speed traps on Waze (miss that more than I thought I would actually), my larger gripe is the forced zoom ratios on Rivian Google maps. Given how massive the center touch screen is, I would LOVE to see some additional customization ability to split the screen for different map zooms. At a minimum I don’t know why the user can’t set our own preferred zoom ratios. On long trips I typically prefer a more zoomed out level to give me a better perspective of where I’m at in the trip. I hate that the minute you zoom out the dynamic tracking stops. Seems so basic.

I sure hope Rivian caves to the "give people a choice what to use" position.

The built-in system is objectively, provably, demonstrably less capable and a worse user experience. I've posted in the RAN thread about my complete clusterfuck of a route trying to find Rivian's own charger with the complete shit system built in. I can post five minutes of video of my wife and I trying to unfuck the routing, then reverting to the add-on CarPlay unit we have. To find Rivian's own fucking charger.

Lots of f-bombs because, fuck(!), this is so damn stupid. Anyone arguing that third party options are not needed just needs to watch the several videos I have of the internal systems being completely objectively broken. And this is not the only time, that sort of thing is pretty routine (every couple months).

Can you tell the internal system, "Hey send a message to my team telling them I'm running ten minutes late to the customer site"? What's that you say, you don't need to do that? Sure, great, fine, but many of us do. Many of us have jobs and lives to tend to, and messaging SAFELY while commuting is intrinsically important.

This is aside from all the minor OPINION based things I can say about how much better the third party apps are for less important things. Media, podcasts, etc. Those are just unimportant, in a world/life sense, but also, we paid $100k for a car and should not have first world problems, right?

I can prove the built in stuff is BROKEN. Opinions are irrelevant.

This "No Carplay" talk echoes Jim Balsillie's "own the stack" at Research In Motion. Some might say that Blackberry had an amazing UI at the time but ultimately their approach killed them. I hope lessons have been learned.

AHAHAHAHAAHAHAH!!!!!

I can't even count how many people told me that the stupid little toy phone from Apple would be dead in three years, and RIM would eat them up. Keyboards forever!!!!!!

Dumbshits.

You're right, luddites keep doing this crap and making the world a worse place for all of us.

Wait, I just realized, this is JUST like talking to the anti-EV dummies!

There have been literally hundreds of these CP/AA threads on this forum, and they always devolve into 2 camps: those that want owners to have choice and those that do not want others to have choice because they don't like it. The lack of empathy in the latter group is insulting but not surprising, given the current political and social climate in this country.

There's a third group, perhaps small. Those of us that don't really care one way or the other, and respect Rivian's business decision to set their own path.

I'm in another group who just likes to argue.

I might be the outlier here, but I don't care if Carplay come to Rivian. We have it in our Toyota Rav4 Prime and the only thing I use it for is WAZE and messaging.......occasionally the weather.

There are only 2 things I would love to see Rivian add to the infortainment system:

1. Native Messaging app. Yes, I know I can say "Hey Siri" or "Hey Alexa", but to have a notification on the infotainment center would be amazing.

2. The clock on the driver screen. It is on the infotainment screen already, but it is tiny.

3 (honorable mention). Have the ability to move the PLAY (music, podcast etc) from the passenger side to the drivers side. This is more for a convienence than anything else.

You say that as if those aren't important functions. "I only use food in order to survive."

"I don't care if my village has water, it just makes me pee."

WTF!

I suspect this is most of the anti CarPlay people. I know this is me. I’m tired of people complaining about a feature Rivian has said no to repeatedly. It’s clear what their stance is.
