i’ll have to go look exactly but it was within a few weeks of the order banks opening up. I’m just going to move ahead with the lightning or another ICE f150. Have a day one lightning reservation but will say that their communication has been about as inconsistent and sporadic as Rivian. I probably should have called/emailed rivian CS yesterday. Just need a truck and my impatience got the best of me.
I chatted with Rivian CS and they told me that I could update my config and it wouldn't push me back. But they also said I would not be given an updated estimate (although dropping from Max to Large COULD mean getting my truck sooner, they said I wouldn't actually know until later in 2022 if that actually happened).

Are you saying you got a second/updated estimate email after your configuration change?

Thanks. Very helpful. Although it is coming from CS and we all know how reliable that is. First half of 2023 is a pretty large window. Getting a large pack in Dec 2022 when I could have got a max pack in Jan-Feb 2023 wouldn't be worth downgrading for me. But having to wait until May-Jun 2023 might sway me. All we can do is hope they tighten their windows or reach out to the rest of us max pack holders after they finish contacting the 2018-2019 order holders.

yes. it said 2nd half of 2023. Keep in mind i never had (to my knowledge) a window on the max pack.

Correct. I'd definitely go Large if it meant Aug 2022 vs June 2023. But if I'd be looking at Jan 2023 Large vs Feb 2023 Max then I'd probably hold out for Max.

I really wish we could have a more open and honest bi-directional conversation with Rivian on this topic.

According to the email that was sent, it should update via your rivian account on the website once they release the feature to the "configurator" I assume that will give us more of a "if you choose this, get it this month, choose this, get it that month" sorta thing

I asked CS about that and they said it would show an estimate for the current config only. You'd have to actually persist the configuration change to get an updated estimate (which may or may not be calculated in real-time). If you didn't like the estimate you could change the config again and see what the re-recalculated estimate is... But as far as "what if" scenarios, I don't think we'll be given that insight.

2023 Rivian R1S
Every production startup from Tesla and everyone else starts with the most expensive highest-margin option to maximize the per-vehicle profit. Even Rivian is following this strategy by only offering the launch edition with adventure trim, and not explorer.
What would be the reasoning for not following this same strategy with a high-margin battery pack add-on? Which option gives you more per-hour margin: Two vehicles with a $5,000 margin each, or one vehicle with a $10,000 margin?
This isn't the one dimensional problem you seem to perceive it as. Maximizing early profit makes the most sense when you don't have much of an order backlog and are still trying to figure out where your next round of funding will come from. Rivian is extremely well funded at present and has more of an order backlog than they can fulfill in a reasonable time frame. They are better off taking a short term hit to profit to ensure they satisfy as many existing customers as possible. Nothing will damage the brand more than unhappy customers. Obvisouly they can't make everyone happy but they are clearly working to put as many vehicles in customers hands as quickly as they possibly can given supply constraints. Seeing more Rivians on the street and hearing reports from happy owners builds brand equity which will continue to drive future orders. A higher volume of deliveries also has the added benefit of allowing them to grow the rest of their supply chain leading to economies of scale and improved negotiating position as they continue to scale up production of current products and start to introduce additional models and factories in the future.

I got the email as well today. Not very inspririnf. I put a reservation down on a large pack and a max pack only a week ago and the email says that both my configurations will be delivering mid 2023. Since I’m going to have to wait that long no matter what, I think I’m going to stick with the max pack.
Coming from a Tesla model Y, really do use most of the range in my vehicle as I do frequent long trips. I expect the range estimates to be worse for the R1 T because of large AT tires and all of the poor aerodynamics issues associated with pick up trucks. So, this only reinforces my inclination to stick with the long range pack.
I am a little bit apprehensive because I wonder how the extra wieght of the Max pack will impact things like tire and suspension wear and handling, since there is probably going to be an extra thousand pounds to carry around, more or less.
However, I am cautiously optimistic that they have been testing max packs and hopefully will iron out any bugs that come with the added weight.
Thoughts?
My max pack r1t ordered back in September 2021 before you delivers in second half 2023 so you are doing alright I guess ✌?‍♂

Probably depends on location. Best of luck
All R1T max pack seem to be slated for the 2nd half of 2023. Regardless of location.

I was given 1st half 2023 estimate on my Max pack R1T, fwiw. And my configured delivery location is one of the eight "unfriendly" states mentioned in the S1.

This makes sense to me, especially since having that insight could cause so many people to reconfigure frequently in an attempt to get their vehicle earlier that it makes planning difficult for Rivian.

I built the configuration we wanted for our vehicle and I’m not going to change to something less desirable (to us for our needs and wants) just for the chance to get the vehicle a little earlier. I’m also assuming that if other people make changes in an attempt to get their vehicle sooner then I may move further ahead in the queue or further back, without changing a thing on my configuration.

If I had to guess, Rivian made the delivery windows as big as they did to keep the overwhelming majority of reservation-holders within their originally-assigned window, no matter what they change. If that is true, an early reservation holder changing from a Max Pack to Large will make a difference in the delivery window and not much else will.

That’s all assuming there aren’t other issues encountered in the future which make Rivian adjust things dramatically. For example, if the supplier of headliners suddenly is unable to produce black headliners then vehicles with those may be put on hold until the required part is available. Likewise, if the power tonneau cover turns out to be especially problematic they may switch to R1T Explore and/or R1S production until they have a solution.

Ultimately, there are so many variables here I think the best plan is to configure what we need/want and then hope for the best.

I too have a first half 2023 with Max pack. Ordered placed January 2019

Your Adventure Package R1T estimated delivery window will be the first half of 2023.
