They should do Garmin instead. Garmin watches are like Apple Watches but good.
The only thing Garmin watches are good for is sports tracking and long battery life. For everything else the Apple Watch is FAR superior. I have both...I never use my Garmin anymore unless I'm going for a run.

The only things that matter are sports tracking and long battery life. Having to charge the thing every day is a non starter. My Fenix charges once a month, has more accurate GPS, trackback and still does NFC payments and can read my text messages even though that's kind of a useless feature for a watch.

Valid until you speak about the Apple Ultra iWatch. I normally get 3-4 days of battery life. It’s a pretty amazing watch though I too love my Garmin.

Do Garmin watches like the Fenix have the functionality to support something like “watch as a key”? I know it has the NFC stuff but I’m not technologically savvy enough to know whether it’s possible.

My Apple Watch Ultra can do all of those things plus it can function as a dive computer.

Also because your Garmin has such long life it doesn't have the electronics to be a phone key, can't have it both ways sadly.

I would LOVE to use my Apple Watch as a key...that would be huge and it's always on.

Yes, it's capable of doing that.

Love my Ultra Apple watch. Can go 3 days, but I usually charge it daily while in the shower. 15 minutes a day and it's all good. (though I swim with it on, I don't like anything on in the shower...I even take off my wedding ring before showering).

If it was AWAK, then I could stop envying those wristband people.

Addressing both sides, with what might be crazy talk, but…

Is it possible there is no singular correct answer?

Can it be that different people have different needs and different priorities which allows multiple products to be made and sold to different audiences who each love their product of choice for legitimate reasons?

Why do so many things here have to devolve to, “Your choice can’t be valid because it doesn’t work for me even if it does work for you?”

Choice is a good thing! If something works for you just be satisfied with your product of choice. Right?

Just fyi this isn’t just a Rivian/apple solution. There’s a whole group that is trying to standardize this across a number of devices and car manufacturers. When wassym was talking about Apple Watch as a key he specifically mentioned that Rivian was just as this event and things looked promising:

https://carconnectivity.org/major-a...ather-to-advance-digital-key-at-ccc-plugfest/

you can also find a list of members on their homepage which includes companies like garmin, Samsung, Apple, rivian, as well as a bunch of other manufacturers. This is the right way to do it, create a standard instead of everyone trying to come up with their own iteration of the wheel. If you also look at the member list, Tesla is noticeably absent.

How is Rivian going to “curate the experience” with watch as a a key? Oh, they’re going to ignore Apple Car Key, and reimplement something that will end up being a substantially worse experience. Good for keeping Rivian software engineers and managers employed until their stock fully vests.
