FWIW, I had a Rivian tech tell me that they've seen folks have issues with unofficial watch apps that try to integrate with the key system to the point that the owner had issues accessing their vehicle and couldn't remove the key causing the issues. Because an unofficial key was used the service department wouldn't help them. Use things like this at your own risk.

Advantage: If your Apple Watch has its own cellular connection, you only need to have your Watch on you, which is much smaller than your phone and is strapped to your wrist (no risk of dropping).

Disadvantages: It's yet another thing to buy, pay for and probably a subscription based service. It's not officially supported app. If Rivian changes their software, whatever API the app taps into could change, rendering the app useless, buggy or worse.

Bluetooth is short ranged, around 10 meters (30 ft). For many remote functions (like cabin climate), it isn't enough. I think max range for UWB is 200 meters (650 ft).

When some people go on an adventure (hiking, kayaking, surfing, rock climbing, etc.) they don’t necessarily want to take their phone with them. That’s where smart watches come in, like the Apple Watch Ultra. So combine that with a Rivian adventure vehicle and their new app and it just makes sense.

Weather changes while you’re on the trail? Heat up your vehicle before you get back without breaking a sweat. Climbing a rock face and someone back at the base camp needs to get in the trunk? Open the vehicle for them with a Siri shortcut or gesture. Then when you get back to the Rivian your vehicle opens up just like it would with the phone app.
