Id disagree we have a model Y performance and the drivetrain is quite a bit quieter than the quad motor R1T. There’s a number of auto reviews discussing the sound of the motors, I don’t find it intrusive but it’s definitely among the louder electric vehicles.
I can barely hear my quad motor in full throttle if I have the stereo above 8. The Tesla is more of an annoying high pitch drill which is why it may seem louder for me.
The quad is NOT loud in an annoying way and is dead silent compared to an ICE truck / SUV

We could have picked up a used quad with 13k miles for $75k but opted for the performance dual from the store for $84k believing dual is the future and a half second unimportant. Then they gave us the charger and installation.

Forget the motors of the quad - they sound actually cool, it is the front suspension of the quad that has me looking at a Dual Performance over another Quad. I need a nice, long test drive of an R1 over Boston roads before I buy another Rivian, and I’m 100% will to “downgrade” to get it as the rest of the Rivian experience is so good. The front suspension experience of the present quad is not one I’m willing to buy back into though. Top tier, 835hp or not.

R1S with the recent suspension update and 20" wheels rides / drives much better than the original configuration / settings / specs.

Even my wife mentioned how much better the ride is compared to when we first got the vehicle in June 2023. She prefers the Rivian ride compared to Ford Expedition.

The 20" all terrains also help to make the ride smoother but the suspension update made the biggest difference overnight.

I have not been in a 3 or Y back to back with my R1S but I really like the sound and those that like a screaming V8 like the sound as an indicator. It isn't overly obtrusive in my mind but it is noticeable.

I own a Tesla Model Y performance. The suspension is not great. Some say it’s terrible. It was harsh when I first purchased it but either I got use to it or the suspension softened up. This was after owning a BMW X7 with 22” sport wheels.

I test drove the R1S. I immediately noticed what I described as a loose suspension. The steering wheel wobbled over every bump. I mentioned this to the rep and they had my adjust the suspension to stiffen it up and this did the trick. It was 100% better.

I had a post-price hike reservation. Ultimately went with a used quad. Couldn’t be happier with my decision. I bought for $84K and it was cheaper than the dual with longer warranty.

I think paying an extra $5k for a performance unlock on the dual is BS. I really only see two choices. If you want the performance and to go 0-60 in three seconds, get a used quad. If you want a Rivian to drive around town in, dual is a great option. These options are effectively cost neutral.

Finally - on my deposit - I signed the purchase order agreement to qualify for the old EV tax credit. The credit was suppose to lock in $250 of my $1,000 deposit. When I cancelled my reservation after I bought a used quad, Rivian refunded me for $900. Not sure why but I didn’t ask questions!

Hope that helps!

I remember the binding contract took $100 away from the $1000 deposit. Not $250. Probably got mixed up with Tesla’s non-refundable $250 deposit?

I’d say performance dual motor, unless you have a specific need for the quads.

After losing your deposit, seems like you’re saving $5k by getting the used quads.

I think the added range you get from duals is worth it. The dual motors are 10% more efficient at the inverter level.

In my view, an additional $5K in a software unlock might not align with practical considerations. The added performance is utilized minimally, probably 0.1% of total mileage, and this acceleration makes passengers car sick anyway.

If you are after the exhilarating acceleration, opting for a used quad at a $5K lower cost provides not only more performance (faster acceleration + torque vectoring), but also a longer warranty.

The real-world range on the Quad is understated. You should search for real-world examples and not the EPA estimate which compares Quad (avg. of different drive modes) vs Dual in automatic conserve model. I get 345mi on 21”s in conserve mode with my Quad. I’m sure the duals are more efficient, but the difference on an apples-to-apples basis is probably less than you might expect.

Not there was a clear cut consensus on this… I’m on the same situation and have asked to change/hold my config since I gave the deposit Dec 22 and wasn’t invited to configure till this month when quad (my original choice) is no longer an option .

I’m at the same state. Someone here shared this Munro video which was interesting. I’m sure most have seen this. I’m still undecided but if the right deal comes along I’m sure I’ll jump on a Quad.

I love sports cars. Love going fast. But, not sure what 0-60 in 3 sec in a 7k SUV gets you. My vote is for the brand new dual because you probably wont use or notice the difference unless you drag race on the weekends. In that case, as my SO would say-you need help.

I just picked up my quad-motor R1S and granted while it's been limited use the noise is barely noticeable. If anything I find the slight whir to be a nice contrast to the otherwise dead silence (first time EVer here) with the radio off.

Having said that, after waiting three years I've found that the R1S is not the most practical daily driver for me here in Chicago so I'm on the fence about keeping it as much as I love most things about it.

Right now it's sitting in a car collector garage with 250 miles while I decide what I am going to do. Not sure if I'm allowed to put this on here is this way but if there was interest l, I might be willing to part. Still not sure but wouldn't be looking to make a profit just cover my cost and tax (which is not insignificant in IL).

Considering a formal post on this site but in the meantime, here are a few pics of my Limestone R1S.

A few months ago I was in a similar situation on my R1T. I was looking at putting a post pre-hike deposit on a dual motor R1T, but something told me to check the used market in my area. I was able to find a fairly low mile R1T in the color I wanted with everything I was going to order on the dual motor, plus more. Taking into account taxes and everything, saved about $15k and got the quad instead.

If you can find a low mile quad that checks your boxes at a great price, it’s a no brainer in my opinion.
