Does the X registration get slightly cheaper every yr?
It does, there is a schedule on the CA DMV site that will show the depreciation every year. I think it is around year 15 it stays flat.

There is also a link on the DMV site that shows estimated registration fee. I ran through for the R1S based on 77k purchase in orange county and it was 803

Edit:
Here is the registration estimator for CA

Here is the VLF depreciation schedule, just look for the line with your purchase price. This talks about the fee and how it drops.

Colorado has insane vehicle registration fees as well. I'm expecting my R1S to run about $1500.

My Taycan was $3800.
Are these fees every year or just the first year?

Constantly reminded why I’m so grateful to not live in California.
The over 300 days of sunshine, ocean, mountains, variety of food, variety of people and cultures constantly remind me why it’s worth the stupid extra fees to live here.

In Colorado its generally 2% of MSRP for registration for the first two years then it becomes 1.85% taxable value and decreases as the car ages. My Tesla was about 1200 when originally bought it. Im estimating about 1,600 for registration ?

I'd prefer to trade in 50 of those sunny days for some more rain.

Registration and plates showed up today. California Registration was $1055 ? What?

And why does it say vehicle use is commercial? Is that normal for the weight class? I certainly didn't register or purchase the truck as a business.

CA DMV shipped the plates to Rivian and then they mailed them to me. I guess that's normal. I feel like I've had to pickup plates at dealers before on special orders.

All trucks in CA are considered commercial. Bought a tundra a few months back and it registered as commercial. Then checked other friends and family with trucks and all are commercial as well. It’s default.

That would not force R1T to be commercial, that is unladen weight, R1T is around 7100 pounds. The GVWR is 8532 so that does not trigger it either.

Clearly they made a mistake when they submitted the registration.
Not a mistake. As other have said, all trucks in CA are considered commercial because you technically can carry things in the bed for commercial purposes. I bought a tundra a few months back and it got a commercial plate.

Haha. It’s not an accident CA is the most populous state in the US. I agree it’s expensive but people keep piling in even with all of those extra fees.
