my truck heats itself up when the outside temps drop.

I’m guessing this is a feature but I can’t find anything about it.

Feature or bug?

when extremely cold, yes. Similarly, the vehicle will run the AC if the interior temps get too hot while parked in the sun on a hot day. You get a notification for both.

It’s a feature, an engine block heater or a remote start function, designed to warm up the engine or interior when temperatures drop. Check your owner’s manual or settings for features like “Auto Start/Stop” or “Cold Weather Mode” to confirm.

This is something I don't understand at all. Is that what this means:

Rivian R1T R1S Cabin heats without me asking it to 1000014190

It's VERY inconsistent when I've seen it. Sometimes it's at 50 degrees. Sometimes at 30 degrees. Is it based on battery temp?

Is there a way to turn off automatic cabin conditioning? Last night I parked my R1S with 4% and thinking I had plenty enough range to get me to a fast charger 5 miles away in the morning.

Temps overnight dropped to the upper teens. I came out to find my truck at 1%.
Very luckily I was able to find a 50kW charger 2 miles away. I was at 0% for half a mile as I limped to it.
Not cool @Rivian

I don’t think this is true. Not mentioned in the manual (that I can find anyway). If you have more information, would you mind sharing?

Any chance you have a climate schedule set up and forgot about it? (currently page 108 of the R1T manual)

Yes, the cause of this was me setting up a scheduled conditioning with a PM vs an AM time.

I also see no evidence this will occur in the cold without you scheduling it to do so.

To answer OP, it'll turn on cabin heat to warm the battery. I've noticed this behavior for years, whether it actually warms the battery or just reduces temp loss from a cold cabin, ??‍♂. If you close all the vents before exiting, and come back to just the floor vents on, it's a clear sign of this.

I try not to be mean here, but think about what you just said. Cold temps, extremely low SoC, parking outdoors... Not cool @Manalishi

I'm not sure why your vehicle did automatic cabin conditioning other than you had previously set a schedule and possibly never disabled it. I never enable these automated climate schedules because I don't want to have to remember to turn them off when I don't want them active. It's easy enough to turn on the climate control with my phone as I'm putting my shoes on to leave the house. Climate schedules are discussed on page 108 of the Owner's Guide (for software 2024.31).

You should have gone to the fast charger the night before instead of planning on doing it first thing in the morning.

First, as another person mentioned, parking a vehicle overnight in freezing temps with the battery in the single percentage range is not cool. You're lucky you were able to make it to a charger. I would never park an EV overnight with single digit percentage on the battery without having connected it to a charging station, even if it was just a 120V outlet. I'm pretty sure the vehicle gives you a warning as you park it with such a low charge state.

Second, the battery will cool down overnight in the freezing temps - you said "upper teens", so I'm assuming temps in F and well below freezing. As the battery cools, it will charge at a slower rate. If the battery cools enough, it won't charge at all and all energy from the charging station will be used to try to warm the battery for it to safely be charged. If you charge the battery up at the end of the day on a road trip, it will already be warm from driving and able to safely accept charging. By charging the battery in the evening before sleeping on a multiple day road trip (assuming you do that), the battery can be charged enough to drive hours to your first charging stop, giving it enough time to warm up the 1,000 pound battery to accept a decent charge rate at your first charging stop in the mid morning.

I had no cabin conditioning schedule set. I had no choice but to park outside because I was at a hotel on a roadtrip. My expectation is that my vehicle should have not done anything but go to sleep, like I needed to.

That's not how either low SoC or batteries in cold temps work.

My friend, you live on an edge I have never visited lol.

All EVs are prone to a a night of rough drain, especially in extreme weather. At 4%, I think I would have topped it off ASAP. Maybe even just getting it to 10-15% as a buffer.

Glad it worked out in the end.
