I was super pumped about the camp speaker at first - I use Bluetooth speakers at work frequently. I think the audio itself is actually pretty good. But as most of you have discovered, the pairing mechanism makes the thing almost entirely unusable. It will pair at random while sitting in the garage and “steal” phone calls. And then it will take forever to pair when you want it to. I tried it for a single workday and said never again.

So my question is whether Rivian has the ability to produce OTAs that will improve on the camp speaker? It should be straightforward to keep it from turning on when the darn thing is docked!! I know lots of people want extra storage there, which is fine, but I would personally still get a lot of use out of a (functional!) camp speaker.
they can save money by getting rid of the clunky thing…you can buy a better one on amazon that works and will be better…the space in the R1 can be used as a lock box

It's sad to see all the hate on the poor speaker. It is a really cool design that puts out good sound and is always there ready to party. I really hope they do the proper updates to it to fix the couple software problems it has. Im one of the ones who would have paid extra to have it.

Our camp speaker has never worked. We could never get it to remain paired and the buttons on it never seemed to do anything. We we did get it paired, it would not do anything. We have a Sony Bluetooth speaker that works great and is half the size of a beer can. The sound from the Rivian Camp Speaker may well be better, but since it doesn't work at all, we don't know.

The camp speaker is in the same boat as the motorized tonneau cover. Both were nice ideas, but only a small percentage of them actually operate.

Sounds like it might not be charged. I had to charge mine with a usb cable, it seemed to work ok after that.

Save it by making it an option, that is compatible with all current vehicle platforms (even the fleet EDV). Then assign a very small engineering team to get it 100% right , once and for all, within a one to two month deadline.

All these issues are news to me. Ours has worked flawlessly.

I charged ours with a USB cable on several occasions. It still never would work.

The only way this is going to see improvement from Rivian is if y’all submit service tickets.

If it isn’t working as it should: service ticket
I submitted a service ticket early on. They compared my camp speaker to the ones they had on hand and said it worked as expected. They did not compare it to any other Bluetooth speaker. The Bellevue SC dismissed my concerns and I'm convinced they could not care less.

I was reading a recent interview by one of the people on the Rivian software team. It was focused on the SDV (software defined vehicle) concept and how Rivian has written almost all their own code. They noted that they use some open source, for instance the bluetooth stack. I wonder if they used the same bluetooth stack in the camp speaker and for the car doors (lock and unlock). Perhaps they should consider a different bluetooth stack.

ugh... well, I'm not going to let that deter me. So far, mine is consistently leaving the dock with zero-to-low charge. If that is 'works as expected' then we have a bigger problem.

its not hate, its a sharing of the reality for some of us.

I tried mine for the 1st time last night and thought, "Hey this things sounds pretty good. A lot better than my JBL speaker. I'll probably use this more than I thought". Then today, I answered my phone in my shop but couldn't hear anything. Turns out my phone was connected to the speaker that was docked in my truck 20 yds away. The speaker was turned off more than 12 hours prior to that.

Tested out the suspension. Guess I need to add the speaker to the checklist.

i thought the camp speaker was gimmicky before i got my vehicle. i found myself using it more (or trying to use it more) than i thought i would. however, as shared by others, its beyond frustrating to use because it doesnt pair well and when it does it doesnt stay paired.

my guess is due to the issues with the speaker and the lack of use, Rivian has pivoted and come up with an idea to create a storage drawer, which probably they should have out of the gate.

they should make the camp speaker optional, remove the existing wireless charging pad (which is also basically useless) and create a lockable storage drawer which has a slot in it for wireless charging of phones. *Rivian, this is free design advice for you. dm me if you need more.
The camp speaker is slated to be removed as a standard included feature. It’s expensive [to make] and not a great product.
