That's crazy. I had no idea and figured that since it was a Federal Tax, it was applied equally but apparently not. I'm too cheap to pay that. And I was thinking of maybe retiring some day on VI or SSI so good to know.

Looks like prices are going up again in 21 days, up another 25%. Rivian sales will be reduced to near zero at that point.

And here we go... all the efforts to curb inflation have gone out the window. Watch, used vehicle prices are going to start soaring again.

Edit
I can't find any evidence of incoming Canadian imposed tariffs on US made automobiles on the current list or next phase (21 days) list. So the increase would only be a result of additional materials costs for parts manufactured by suppliers in Canada, or raw aluminum which may be used in Rivian's vehicles. Those would be a small incremental cost change, not a full 25%.

That's not just going to be isolated to Rivian. These tariffs are going to raise the price for all US manufacturer (GM, Ford, Stellantis Rivian, Tesla) vehicles, with Tesla in line for 100% increases.

The US president is promising to escalate tariffs even more if/when Canada retaliates.
He's going to burn the North American car industry to the ground, and drive the entire continent into a recession.

NAFTA - Rips it up, imposes tariffs, then capitulates due to economic problems with a new USMCA agreement. Hails it as the best thing ever.

Rips up USMCA and imposes tariffs on Can Mex because they've been taking advantage of US for far too long under guy with the B at the start of his last name, but not the guy that negotiated the agreement in the first place.

It's hard not to talk about all this without starting a P-O-L-I-T-I-C-A-L debate. Something frowned upon in the forums.

Really what makes my head spin is someone railing about how bad the current agreement is and only an idiot would sign something like that, either gaslighting or so far gone does not remember he is the one that signed that agreement. ?‍♂

Edit: Hoping stating fact is not a political commentary. ??

The worst part, is damage is done, it further alienates trade partners and they look to other countries for more stable agreements.

you nailed it.

First rule of business keep customers happy, once they leave much harder to get them back.

I’m a perfect example of that, I’m not one to shop around to save pennies. If I have someone (I.E. phone service, Gardner, detailer, etc) I’m happy with I stick with them. If they become unreliable or really screw something up, I look for someone else. Odds of me ever going back to them are pretty slim.

I looked at those lists this morning and electric vehicles were on there.

Reuters is reporting EVs included: https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadas-plan-retaliatory-tariffs-us-2025-03-04/

SECOND TRANCHE
The Canadian government will be consulting with the public and stakeholders for a second tranche of retaliatory tariffs. These will include a wide range of products imported from the U.S. such as passenger vehicles and trucks, electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products, fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork and dairy.
