Recently my R1S has not been preconditioning the battery when I set a charger destination in the nav.
I’m curious if this is because of mild temperatures (60s and 70s recently). Or perhaps because I’m not going past the charger, that is I’m setting the destination as the charger so it might think I don’t need any extra charge to get to my destination?
Most of my fast charging was on summer road-trips where it was both hot and I had a destination past the charger set.

I have found it doesn't precondition in this scenario. For me it only preconditions when i set the destination and it picks the charging stops. Unless its really cold i feel its not worth preconditioning. So i do what you did and just nav to charger..

I am new to this charging thing. But was on a long RV trip. First charge no precondition. The temp was 65, second charge a few hours later was with precondition temp was 86. So I guess temps and other things effect precondition.

I have set destination as charger recently and my truck did precondition so I know that's not it.

Does the truck know there is a charger there? If not, it won't precondition.

I believe preconditioning wants the battery pack to be in a "sweet spot" temperature range so it may not always need to do it. I've seen mine precondition in 90 degree weather the few times I used L3. I have not experienced cold weather with it yet.

It does. Clicked the rivian charger on the map and said go. Sounds like the weather is just too nice for precondition. I’ll take it ?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Even if it’s set as a destination, it will precondition if it thinks it needs to. That said, it’s unclear to me the exact parameters by which it decides to do it.

I found a trick to get it to always precondition. On my last long trip I would get to within 30 miles of the charger, then put in my next charger as the destination. Not only would it always precondition, but it would also give me the target SoC to get to the next charger.

It says it on the navigation screen. It also gets loud, at least in the summer when it’s cooling the battery

Something that may be obvious to some but not to others. It took me a while to figure out and I still don’t always get it right: I find that you HAVE to click on the charger icon on the center display map and start navigating to the charger that way of you want to precondition. The destination icon should then be a lightning bolt and not the waypoint icon. If it’s the waypoint icon, you’re navigating to the address of the charger, not the charger itself. Same goes with sending waypoints from phone. If you search for charger and even include “charging station” in search which will often display both the charger itself and the address of where it’s located, and send that to the vehicle, it loads as a waypoint and not a charge stop. I find this super annoying because if you use the center display map to search and choose your waypoint from the results, it will NOT be the charger. So, now that you’ve found the charger you want, you have to EXIT from the search workflow, at which point the map resets to your CURRENT location, then pan and zoom BACK to the location of the charger you just found, where there will be the charging icon, then click on that and navigate that way. This is difficult if your next charge stop is 200 miles away, because that is a lot of panning and zooming and if you’re not familiar with the area, like on a long road trip, you can easily lose where that Charger is on the map.

One more gripe; Rivian doesn’t even have a custom algorithm for searching for RAN stations. If you want to navigate to the RAN in Waynesboro VA, you should be able to type in “Waynesboro Rivian” or “Waynesboro RAN”. NOPE. You have to search for “Rivian Adventure Network” Don’t append or prepend a location because that does nothing. Now all the RANs around you show up, sorted by distance, no sense if they are north south east or west of your location, and not always easy to locate the one you wanted because of where they list the town it’s in. I mean, the big benefit of writing your own software is that you can optimize happy paths like that.

Rivian looked at my R1S during this condition and reported that the battery would not precondition if the battery temp was at the required temp. I believe temps were in the 60s when I did this test.

I spent a lot of effort with our SC on this topic over the summer. They don't currently have a "preconditioning successful" flag or a "preconditioning not needed" flag in the vehicle basically. What you're seeing is consistent with what I saw. It's less the external temps though, and more the internal battery temp that it's targeting for the charger power level you are navigating to.

Yes, once they added the data screen with battery temp to the drive mode screen I could see on the next road trip that when battery was approximately room temp (can't recall exact temp it seemed to hone in on) no conditioning, colder and the car would heat it up for pre-conditioning, if it was hotter the car would cool it down for pre-conditioning. Made sense with the data screen
