has anyone tried this "car play box" that i have been getting instagram ads for? it looks interesting, but like most EVs - the R1T doesnt offer a convenient space to mount the suction cup holder. if anyone has had any experience with it, please let me know.

I'm pretty sure what you're referring to is a wireless adapter. It's for cars with wired Car Play functionality already built-in. The box simply allows for wireless connectivity from your phone. There's no simple add-on to add Car Play to non-compatible systems.

I was referring to a specific product called the “CarPlay Box” and its suction cup holder for dashboard mount. Fully aware of the lack of adaptability for car-play and EVs.

On the contrary, there are many options for adding Car Play to cars which did not originally come with it. They range from self-contained external displays (e.g. RoadTop, which several people here have) to behind-the-dash systems which use the vehicle's original display, to replacement head units (neither of which are an option for Rivian at the moment). Some are simpler than others but there are many options out there.

I don't know what the "Car Play Box" is, but I have the RoadTop unit which I mounted underneath the dash. My issue with it at the moment is that it needs a firmware update to address an issue with sound cutting in and out, but it can only be applied with an Android device, which I do not own. Other brands may not have this same issue. One other nit is that I find it reflects off of the rear window at night, but this may not be an issue with other drivers or other screen locations.

Sound issue aside, it does what it says. It has wireless CarPlay (the connection to the phone is wireless and it connects automatically) and it also connects wirelessly to the Rivian via Bluetooth. Using it is an easy as plugging in the 12v adapter (assuming you have the under-dash 12v; if you don't it gets more challenging). It sends album art etc. to the main screen, and it's reasonably easy to reach, but using Siri works best.

Thanks. Since i watched the CarPlay Box video on the ad, i have received about four more ads for similar products. Going to make it a project to write them down and read the reviews.

Our definitions of "simple" are not in agreement.

Is anyone using RoadTop or similar system that would post about experience and set up? The current phone interface (even after the latest OTA update) is just so lacking and I am wondering if there is a suitable solution that takes it out of the Rivian Software Engineers hands.

Im not sure about tbe Carplay box you are talking about but I mounted one of these on my motorcycles:

It has a ram mount-like attachment that you could mount in The Rivian using one of these:

It does the job and would do what you need but the screen is a bit small. There is a larger version out there. It's possible that your box may have the necessary mounting hardware in the back.

There are a few threads on the forum about them, complete with installed photos. Long story short: it’s a very simple set up, streams to the Rivian via Bluetooth, connects wirelessly to the phone, so it all connects automatically when you get in the car. The screen quality is not great, but it’s passable. In general it works as advertised and is simple to install and use, eye-roll inducing claims to the contrary notwithstanding. Some have had trouble with some models having audio output issues, but those are reportedly fixed by a firmware update.

I ordered one of these for my R1T I will be getting in November.

It seems to have good reviews and also saw some sharing on Youtube, so looking forward to trying it out!
