It appears from the notes on the 43.0 update that they have addressed this issue thanks to RJs dad. We just need to wait for the next update.

This is a different case. In my test, it worked as expected if l put the car in car wash mode first. The problem only happened when the door is opened, put the car in N mode, don’t release the Brake and press the Car Wash mode.

I did another test this morning. I left the key card in the car instead of the key fob, and did the exact same steps. The key fob could open the door.

So, my conclusion is... always keep the fob with you!

When I tested the scenario last night, I found that the seatbelt played nothing in my case, the seatbelt theory was an early assumption.
I haven't been through a car wash yet, but I was super annoyed to find out that if either of the front seatbelts is buckled it thinks someone is in the car, regardless of no weight on the seat. I had hoped to find a way to defeat the obnoxious seatbelt chime by using an extender so it wouldn't ding at me the second I got in and instinctively touched the brakes. Unfortunately I realized my error when I returned to my frosty car in the middle of FL summer because it had been on, unlocked, and running the AC all day.
Correction, my bad! This morning I actually found that the seatbelt buckle played a part too. If the seatbelt is not buckled, I could open the door outside. If the seatbelt is buckled without a person, the only device that could unlock the door was the key fob.

Maybe. We will have to see, but it seems that have added a specific button to support car wash mode that may behave different

I wonder if it would help if car wash mode could be remotely controlled.
Possible if they put the option as standalone, I guess! The app thought the car was "in use" and did not present any options to control the car.

Funny story, right after commenting here I went to give my truck an ONR wash (first time using the stuff and it's incredible! I'm a believer now; link for the unfamiliar) and when I finished with a side I give it a light spank with the towel (as one does) and car wash mode instantly clicked off.

So... did you try spanking your truck to escape car wash mode? I'll contact Rivian to have them add it to the owner's guide.

?

Spanking only works on my partner... my R1S needs a little more than spanking to wake up. :)

100% not an use error! If Rivian allows this to happen.
I agree, there should be no scenario possible for you to lock yourself out of your car.
If you'd left your phone in the car, it should not have been possible to lock the car from the outside. And if you had the phone outside, it should have been possible to lock it.

I surmise that this had nothing to do with carwash mode. I noticed the other day that while I my door was open, the door handle on the driver down went down while the rear doors were popped out. I also noticed another time that the door handles were not presenting even though the car was clearly in park and unlocked. A recent software update has caused some inconsistency with the door handle presnetation for sure.

Something that has occurred to me twice is, the car going off car wash mode when washing my car in one of those self wash places. The charging port opened both times. I could have easily sprayed water in there!
I noticed running water will set off the button sensor for the charge door. Gotta lock it to prevent that.
