This sort of publicity will drive Rivian to make spare parts available for others to install.

They should allow their glass manufacturer to sell to Safelite so this specific issue doesn’t occur in future. It would also relieve pressure on the service centers.

Only when the manufacturer has a monopoly on service. Then you get monopoly prices.

Apparently the CEO’s Taycan (which is pricier than a Rivian) is cheaper to repair. $4000 for a rear windshield and $8000 for a bumper is outrageous, even for an expensive car, IMHO.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Saw it was Cloudflare, saw the word “disaster” and immediately was concerned about something legitimately alarming with respect to security of the trucks, specifically regarding connectivity.

Relieved he was just whining about service costs.

As with most of these stories there is a clear lack of details. Did he damage more than just the back glass? There are other parts above it. If he did have more damage and isn’t disclosing it in his complaints, then he isn’t telling the full story. Same applies to the “cosmetic bumper dent” he added to his list of grievances.

Rivian’s repair costs are high, but we also catch people deliberately omitting details in these stories all the time.

Vaguely reminds me of the time someone added up the retail price of all the oem parts it would take to assemble a car yourself.

tl;dr The sum of the parts far exceeds the retail price of the vehicle already assembled

Rivian definitely has a lot of room for improvement when it comes to designing for repair.
Yes...but the same can be said for a lot of automakers. Similarly, those of us who work on our own vehicles often bemoan the fact that vehicles are made to be assembled once for the least cost and rarely do they come apart nicely or easily.

Look at manufacturer marking on the passenger side bottom corner. I believe the manufacturer is Fuyao. US factory is in Ohio. It's been said the windshield is about $1800. Not sure how this guy ended up with $4500. Maybe waved his CEO business card around too much.

I want Rivian to succeed and own some stock. These costs need to be controlled if Rivian wants to go mainstream. I am not sure if Rivian is charging a crazy markup or if it's low volume or bad design. This is not sustainable and will drive insurance prices sky high.
