On a recent trip to the Grand Canyon, my R1S was having difficulty charging at Electrify America (I know shocker). But the symptoms were interesting. It would start charging and then fail at 8-9kwh, the charger would report vehicle error, and the port would turn red. Throughout the trip this behavior was repeated 4 times, while others on the trip with us could charge on the same charger no problem. I talked to EA and they said they had no problems at these chargers. Additionally it charged at RAN locations perfectly each time.

I scheduled service when we returned just to check it out. Rivian could not get the truck in for months, but it wasn't a big deal, so fine. Then a couple days later it started throwing an error at home on AC charger (Tesla Gen 3 wall charger native j1772) The Tesla charger was reporting a thermal issue and derating itself, but this time the Rivian itself reported vehicle charging error.

I updated the service ticket, asking for it to be escalated now, they called me the next day and scheduled service for the following day. To me it really seems to be a thermal issue, maybe a bad onboard charger.

Rivian reported they found the CCN Module was defective and they are replacing it (They have had the vehicle for a week now). I expect to get it back today, but have a camping and overlanding trip at Big Bear scheduled for this weekend, and I am a little nervous to say the least. Thoughts?

It takes a couple days for the tear down, replace and test of the charger. How quickly you get it back will depend on:

1. Availability of the replacement unit
2. Other high priority work ahead of you.

Overall it’s a straight forward process and if they have the part there’s a decent chance you’ll get it back this week if they’ve started the work.
